Default Since 2020 Basketball Cards slowing up.......

I have notice lately that the hoarders of NBA boxes (2020 Chronicles, illusions etc have drop there prices a little recently to get them off. (Im still waiting until some drop to retail prices ) but I was wondering are people fearing holding on to these boxes? Do you fear holding onto a few unopened boxes? don't you think a box of 2020 NBA boxes will be worth waaay more next year? let me know your opinion on this guys. Thanks in advance.

With any new product it can take months for prices to stabilize.

There are a ton of new resellers who are only trying to make a quick buck. Those resellers are driving the prices right now by under-cutting each other to off-load their product as quick as possible. Most are buying on credit or with funds they might need for other expenses, so getting the money back is more important to them, instead of holding onto any product.

You can look back at many releases in the last 6 months and see the same price pattern. There is usually always a dip 3 to 4 weeks after an initial release as that is when the market is most saturated. Sometimes prices go back up quickly, sometimes they don't.

I am one who is buying during the dip in pricing. And will be holding until at least the next season. No guarantee that prices will go up dramatically, but there are worse investments you could make.

I'm ready for some of these people to take a hit and things can normalize a bit. I went to a show yesterday and there was sealed retail all over the place.

There’s no shortage of retail. Tons being held. Lots of guys gonna be caught holding the wrong stuff.

People don’t need to let it go yet not competing with anything new.

How much 2019 wax is BO and SC sitting on? At some point you need cash flow. Maybe there are selling more than I would expect.

Maybe the Modern Wax Fund helps with that?

When everybody and their momma is trying to sell sealed retail boxes, probably will implode lol. I've seen deans, doctors, single mothers, even people who consult with Goldman's Sachs on the marketplace. All with unreasonable asking prices lmao. I cant wait until they try they this with the next class cause I have zero incentive to even buy above MSRP with the next draft class lol

Yeah having 3 good-to-excellent rookie classes in a row is partly why wax is where it is, and is gonna be a big reason why a lot of the new blood is gonna lose their shirt next year when trying to hoard. Might happen even earlier if Zion gets injured or doesn't develop and/or if the Grizzlies take a step back or succumb to injuries.

I have a feeling the Grizz will be quite good next year though so it might keep 19-20 stuff hot.

I would be nervous sitting on a mountain of Chronicles and Illusions wax. Neither are in the top 20 of Panini's best products. Long term, you want to be holding quality product.

I would also add that, since everyone and their newborn baby is holding and hoarding those mountains of boxes - who's going to pay those prices that you want to sell it for when everyone is trying to cash in? Lol. Be like 20 sellers to a couple buyers ratio lmao. I know chronicles 2018 are at crazy prices, but not everyone was hoarding that as oppose to this year's chronicles. It'll be interesting to see when that time comes.

Topps A&G is getting snapped up from shelves. You really think you'll find gobs of basketball at msrp?

Facebook prices have sunk yet BO repeatedly sold out and reloaded Illusions retail at higher prices. What gives? The demand for all basketball is as strong as ever but the writing is on the wall for sneakerbots. Not every basketball product will get you a massive profit. As for Chronicles and Illusions hobby, the jacked up prices right out of the gate were never going to be sustainable.

It's simple. If you quit worrying about what other people want and only buy what you actually like then you'll never get stuck holding the bag. Most people can't absorb losses like a store so don't buy like one.

At least the latter two, sure. Or Prizm, Optic, Revolution, etc. Not sure for the purpose of the emoji. Perhaps you are referring to the insane buy-in price of NT - fair enough. My comment was more general and not specific to 2019-20 product. If you are stashing wax long-term (10-20 years), I would only focus on the top 10 products or so.

True, but if you get into product at MSRP or a slight markup (under 2x MSRP), I'd be less nervous.

I wouldn't bet the farm on either product, but definitely bought a bit to hold and see where it goes. You can't win unless you play the game.

Any top 10 list will be largely subjective. That doesn't mean I'd put Illusions there lol. But Revolution above all forms of Chronicles? That stuff was just sitting untouched before Covid.
