Check out Goldin to see it for yourself.
A Tatis Jr. Ref Ref. Rookie graded a 9.5/10 auto just sold on Goldin for 222K A Game Used Michael Jordan Jersey with authentication from numerous sources sold for 221K. Let that sink in for a second!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

How many game used Jordan jerseys are there, hundreds?
How many Tatis? 5. There is your answer.

The hobby is a ticking timebomb I feel..... And this is from someone who has a lot invested into it. I fear for stuff like that. Although much more limited than a Jordan Jersey, if Tatis starts to struggle and/or get injured, his stuff will tank. Much like Bryce Harper.....
I'm nervous for all of the Luis Robert high end that I have for similar reasons..... |

I mean, I get the hype, but $222K for a card of a guy that hasn't played a full season's worth of games is crazy! Props to the seller and the huge windfall, but that has just as much likelihood to go down as it does to go up.
But, as they always say: Never risk more than you're willing to lose! Good luck to the buyer. May Tatis win multiple MVP's and break all kinds of records! |

Worth it. Tatis is not Acuna. Tatis is having one of the all time best starts to a career and he's not lucking his way into it. He's got big injury risk but he has been truly unique so far.
Robert and Tatis are not on the same planet right now. Robert is the classic Acuna type hype guy who's not as good as his prices Last edited by BBases31; 08-24-2020 at 02:08 PM. |

Are you implying that Acuna, Soto, or Trout "lucked" into their starts? What has Tatis done that those three didn't do? |

If I had $220k cash to spend...Im buying the card too. AND Jordan is my favorite athlete of all time. If Tatis becomes an all-time great...we saw what a rare Trout can do. If he doesn't...I bet the guy that spent $220k wont remember that he lost it. He probably already has a "rare" Jordan jersey.

MJ is actually quickly becoming undervalued in this market.
Only two MJ cards have ever sold publicly for as much as that Tatis. That is just wrong.

He's at about 500 ABs in his career and at 5.7 WAR. Acuna and Soto were both at 3.7 and Trout was I believe around 6.5 for their first 500. Tatis has a made huge leap up this season though(as Trout did in his 2nd). His offense is obviously incredibly improved but his defense has as well. |

Yes, its crazy how lucky Acuna was lucky enough to win ROY and then have lucky swings and luck at running last year to luck his way into being only the 10th player in MLB history to join the 40/30 club. Such luck! |

Certainly. And that makes comparisons difficult. But there are MJ inserts that everyone would consider elite that don’t sell for as much as some of the rarer Prizm parallels of superstar rookies the last few years.

That came out wrong. I did not mean to imply Acuna's performance was luck, he's a great player. I meant to say that Tatis is actually performing like the best player in baseball and deserving of the hype. Acuna was the most hyped, expensive non-Trout guy but he was never anywhere close to the best player in baseball and thus not deserving of the hype or price level

There are not 100's of Game Used MJ jerseys..not real ones anyways. Jordan played in an era where teams didn't use but a few jerseys a season. Mayyybe during his Washington stint there might be more but certainly not 100s of legit ones

I think we're all just saying that we'd like to see a larger sample before we go all crazy with prices. The one major difference between the two items in question is risk factor. The Jordan jersey is HIGHLY unlikely to have a chance to decrease in value; however, it's potential upside probably isn't as high as the Tatis. But on the other hand, that Tatis could absolutely crash if his performance dipped, he got hurt, etc. We're talking about how other people spend their money, but it does impact the hobby as a whole. While there are great news articles about how much cards go for (and likely draws more people into the hobby), what's going to happen when one of these big-dollar cards crashes in value and the media gets a hold of that? I.E.: "Tatis card sells for $222K, but after multiple injuries isn't worth $5K!!!" |

...I hope the BO member who sold a Tatis Red Auto Refractor right after call up (possibly this one) doesn't see this thread or auction.

I think the big difference is that Tatis has had good success, and only that. He hasn't really had any struggles yet (outside of the injury last year). It's coming, no doubt. I'm just interested in seeing how long the new "investors" stick around when he pulls an 0-for-20 at some point. How many MVP's and years of success (eight?) did Trout have before his red cracked $200K? |
