It’s possible to think that people are too easily offended these days AND Thom Brenneman should be fired.

In theory anyway.

That’s a small population IMO

100% deserves to be fired, it’s 2020, you can’t use that kind of awful backwards way of thinking. Especially at work

For people defending him, you defending him is a prime example of being homophobic as well. You don’t realize the harsh connotation of that word and the decades of negativity that comes with it. It’s derogatory, there’s no need for it.

For the people who are saying “speak how you want”, how about we just don’t use those terms? Not everything you think needs to be said
Yet MLB is fine with racist team names, racist imagery and racist fans. It is just one is a protected political group and the other isn’t.

I believe this exists, but not in this instance. People should be offended by what Brenneman said and there should be no defense for it.

This will eventually change in the next few years. They have to or suffer globally.

I keep referring to the NBA and how they became a global brand by doing stuff exactly like this and acting quickly on people who loved to cross the line (Donald Sterling).

NFL is following suit by booting the Redskins.

MLB has to as well....or just stay in their bubble forever.

One thing I will day about people being easily offended in today’s time. Yes obviously there are instances where the reaction if something is very small where the reaction is overblown.

There are a lot more instances, for example this case where this is a big deal because people finally have the power nowadays to stand up to it. Back in older times, blatantly racist, homophobic and sexist things were things people just had to deal with. People feel like they couldn’t speak out. Nowadays, people have the power to speak out against it. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to change and getting rid of derogatory speak.

People hide behind comments such as “I guess we can’t say anything anymore!” Or “those snowflakes are always triggered”, because they’re uncomfortable with the conversation that occurs when something like this happens. If more people sat down and learned of the harm of words and phrases like these, people can understand why that type of speak is extremely harmful.

Also the word is offensive but the truly offensive thing people want to change is the meaning and mindset behind it. How he casually just says it without thinking there will be repercussion. It’s a mindset. Changing a mindset is difficult and it takes time.

People become uncomfortable with having to change their mindset. At the end of the day, how about you just don’t say something like that, is it going to ruin your life if you can’t say that phrase ever again? No, it won’t. You saying that phrase, is representative of a mindset of homophobia that shouldn’t exist

Can't bring Marty back either I wouldn't think. Where do think most people learn to speak like that? That gets passed down until there's a break in the chain.

He was just smarter than his son to not say in on air.

You don’t have to be offended by something to know it’s wrong and has no place in modern day. Not only is this announcer a bigot, he’s a moron and I doubt that’s the first time he’s said something like that off air.

I’m honestly more offended by the people in this thread trying to excuse it or blame PC culture. Y’all need to grow the f up. Just because you’re ok with bigotry doesn’t meant it’s ok.

Oh good so Gavin Nelson spared the armpit of California even more misery. And you choose to live there. The home of Scott Peterson, Is that all a gender studies degree gets you these days, a house in Modesto?

Jim Day is always with the team doing interviews and announcing on occasion.

This is pretty disappointing to me as a reds fan. I’ve had the luxury (though some wouldn’t consider it that now) of having a few personal chats with Thom over the years and he always seemed like a genuine guy. He was extremely kind to me and takes time to socialize with folks he has never met. That said, I imagine that’s the last we’ll hear of him as an announcer.

I just hope Thom gets the same 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 17th chances that other people get when they rape, loot, and pillage society.

When your job is to speak to millions of people, you have to be uber-careful of what you say and when you say it.

I agree with everyone saying that that kind of talk has absolutely no place at work (debating what people can say on their own time is a different argument). You can't say this on a conference call at work. You can say this to a coworker. You can't say this on a personal phone call sitting in your own office if someone overhears it. You certainly can't say it on air on live TV. He's a professional that knows how broadcasts work. You have to check that stuff at the door.

You avoided the question bro. Why do you live in the armpit of America tossing stones while living in a glass house? People who choose to live in Modesto have no right to criticize anything. Especially not Texans. We are the #1 destination of ex Californians.

This is an incredibly terrible take. By this logic anyone who’s related to someone who committed a terrible crime deserves to be in prison also. Where’d they learn it at? This kind of behavior gets passed down until there’s a break in the chain.

I’ve lived elsewhere and absolutely choose to live here. I love the work I do. I can make a day trip to great beaches, the snow, Reno, Tahoe etc. I actually just moved to Turlock too

Yep, very true.

Say it in your own home if you want.

Unless you're the owner of the Clippers, then you can be recorded in your own house without your knowledge by someone and then lose your assets in the process. Nice to know cancel culture dates back a few years.

What Thom Brennaman said was wrong and he rightfully deserved to be punished. Now at the same time, Joe Biden said Black People who vote for Trump are not Black and he did not get punished. Then there's Drew Brees who shared his opinion about kneeling for the National Anthem and got tremendous media backlash whereas DeSean Jackson quoted Hitler did get punished but did not media backlash. There is a huge double standard here.

Well now I’m Concerned for you as Turlock is known as, well, another body part of California. Much grosser than an armpit. Unless the livestock ranches are gone. I mean people from Fresno look down their noses on people from Turlock, you are OK with that? My college roommates sister went to Stanislaus and wow one visit to see her was enough. The girls resembled the scenery.
