Default Just bought my first ever Basketball blaster. How did I do

Hi Everyone,

I'm almost exclusively a baseball and hockey collector. I went to Walmart this morning looking for restocked Topps Chrome baseball, but they were sold out. There was a fresh display of Panini Chronicles, so on a whim I picked up a blaster box. I know a few of the big names (Zion, Morant, Barrett, Lebron, Curry), but otherwise don't know anything about basketball. Can you tell me if there are any other names I should be looking for in this box?

I don't know the checklist, distribution of stars, etc., but I think for $30 I probably am close to getting my money back out of the box. I've attached a picture of what I think are the best hits. I'd appreciate any input on what these might be worth, and which card(s) I should hang onto.

Thanks

I would keep the 2 Zion's on the upper corners and sell the other 3 cards. Make your money back and more + keep the best 2 cards in the box. Sweet pink essentials and Phoenix. You did about as good as you can do off one blaster.

I'm naive when it comes to basketball, but do they reliably sell above the $30 retail price? If so, how much? It's probably not worth my time if they get $40/box, but may be worthwhile if I can get more.

So if you walked into a target that hasn’t been stocked for two months due to COVID and saw the rep stocking 50 Megas, 60 blasters, and 150 cellos of mosaic, you would buy just one of each right?

I’d throat punch the rep. When he was down on the ground gasping I’d put my foot on his chest and take a good 20 seconds to stare down anyone that may think of entering my card aisle. They need to know I mean business because it’ll take a couple minutes to load that all into my cart without damaging the cards. I don’t want anyone to get ideas while I’m clearing the shelves.

When I’m done I’ll take his employee badge and toss the rep a $20 and tell him next time call me first so I don’t have to hunt him down if someone else gets my cards.

That last comment was tongue in cheek. I'm a baseball guy and we have the same problem with supply. I never clean out a rack, even if it would be to my financial benefit. Based on my memory from the 90s, nothing kills the hobby faster than pricing out the young collectors.

Yea, I was just trying to inject a little humor on a Tuesday. I hope you got a laugh out of it...…...

You would have to fight me to the death. No weapons. FYI I haven’t shaved in 3 weeks and will be wearing my Starter sweats with the extra support elastic. Good luck.

When I see 12 year olds discuss with their pre-pubescent bros about how much they are going to bank by flipping product, I can still sleep well enough by grabbing 5 blasters instead of one. Same goes for the middle aged mom with her eBay app locked and loaded. Same goes for the 30 year old dad searching through the section and leaving it like a garage sale while his son sifts through the dinosaur section.

I would, yes. Only because the Targets in my area have a one box/pack per product limit, or a limit of 2 boxes per sport.

Agree very strongly here.

Im sorry but most of today's kids are not going home and putting all their cards in toploaders/binders the way that we did 30 years ago. Do some kids? Sure. No need to respond here with single anecdotes about your son or nephew who's an ardent collector. I know they're out there. I'll just about guarantee you that there 3 kids who are trying to rip and flip for every one that's purely "collecting", though. The difference is that most are doing so to put that money into nicer cards rather than pay bills.

We're missing how funny it is that this dude just wandered into a shop and bought a retail box of cards while all around there are others camping out, stalking reps and digging tunnels under the toy aisle.

It seems that rural Canada has its perks.

And had no idea if they were worth a damn. Honestly no offense OP. If I walked in and saw hockey, soccer or Pokémon I would have no idea if it’s good or not. One rule of thumb on retail basketball: buy it.

None taken. Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn. As a Canadian I am qualified to say don't waste your time on hockey if you're looking to make money, it's a wasteland.
