Default Supercollecting a Guy Who May Never Pan Out

Hey all,

For the second time in my collecting 'career,' I've decided to have some fun and 'supercollect' a 2020 prospect.

The first time was back when I was still in high school -- and I put multiple (albeit small) paychecks into J. Brent Cox, the Yankees reliever who never made it to the bigs and is now a high school teacher in Texas.

Hoping to latch onto a player this time who will play Major League Baseball at some point and maybe -- just maybe -- have 25 HR+ potential. At the least, it'll be fun to follow his trajectory from level to level.

Would love to hear your stories about stashing specific prospects early in their careers, and any big failures/successes you've had. I realize that the vast majority of these guys never pan out, but hey -- these colors look nice.

My Sherten Apostel collection so far:

I’ve got 44% of his cards. My first SuperFractor is on the way, as well as five more parallels I don't have.

I did the same with Peter O'brien. In the end, I lost my house, car and wife. But it was a magical ride and totally worth it.

I think I remember reading about that in the paper.

I did something similar with Luis Olmos in 2009 when I entered the hobby

Apostel's floor is nonzero. Power + hand cannon assures that.

Awesome stash though, looks great!

I collected/hoarded 1988 Donruss Geronimo Berroa back in the day. Was considered a SP at the time and I went to every LCS near me and tried to buy as much as I could. I ended up with about 500 of them.

This is like playing Penny Stocks.... If the guy turns into a superstar, you sir are gonna be a very rich man...!

I super collected the 1993 Football Rookie Class.... They’re not worth much, but Bledsoe, Bettis, and the rest of them are still some of my favorite cards in my collection!

I super collected Trevor Gretzky when he was a Cubs prospect, all because I used to collect his dad (Wayne) while growing up...

I think the kid is an "actor" now...

I supercollected Michael Burgess from 2007 Bowman Draft. Back when a $40 auto out of draft was a big deal!!! Still have them all too

I collect Corbin Martin. His debut was great. Games after that, not so much. Then needed Tommy John surgery and then got traded to Arizona. I'm still hopeful he could be a number 3 or 4 starter.

Rejoining the hobby in early 2018 means I accidentally super collected two guys. I decided to re-learn the card hobby buy watching breakers and spending an embarrassing amount on buying into them.

I entered breaks looking for Rickey Henderson autographs since he was my favorite to collect back in the junk wax days as a kid. His inserts were always super cool to me. Also being from Arizona I was like, well, I watch the Dbacks sometimes and they are SUPER cheap in breaks so I picked them up too.

So my Dustin Fowler and Anthony Banda rookie card collections are astonishing as they exploded out of every release in 2018 like glitter after a strip club.

I have quite a collection of both of them, accidentally.

But I find myself rather fond of those cards now if i'm honest. I keep them right next to my cards worth 100x as much.

My guy was Jordan Tata. I was convinced he was going to be the guy. Sitting on a lot of his cards right now. To a lesser extent I went after Joel zumaya, Jair jurrgens, and Andrew Miller. I should have dumped Jair after his big year with Atlanta. Miller has carved out a decent career, but not as the starter everyone thought he would be, and gets no hobby love.

Mine was David Justice. I thought he was going to be something special, and for a while he was. He had a sweet swing with some power. Sold it all but 8 cards.

Dustin Ackley back in 2010/11. Had the close to the entire rainbow of his 2011 Update (should have went after someone else in that set...oops).

Zumaya was unhittable. Stupid guitar hero.

Ooph. That one hurts, he wasn't a cheap prospect to collect.

I've got close to the rainbow for Cole Irvin of the Phillies for basically no reason. I pulled an orange U18 auto of his and just decided to go for it. Should have sold when he got called up because he's on the path to being out of the league in a couple years.

I’ve still got all of my Daniel Robertson cards. Full rainbows of almost every set he’s in. Hoping he gets out of Tampa soon and turns into the next Justin Turner.

Still hate that game for that very reason. I did pick up his gold bowman chrome cheap before he attempted his comeback, but the comeback didn't really work out either
