Default How is this a ‘Black 10’

There is a Zion rookie base Black 10 on PWCC auctions that looks clearly off center graded a Black 10. How is this possible? What am I missing

Don't argue dammit, if BGS says its a 10, then its a 10. You do not question their wisdom.

There’s no such thing as a Pristine card. There is no Black Label 10 that is actually Pristine and would have 10s in every category across the board if cracked and resubmitted.

The value is in the label itself, not the card.

If that’s how some people want to collect and want to pay up for that labeling, that’s their prerogative and completely fine to do.

When looking for perfect centering, trust PSA not BGS.

Wait, are we talking about the same company that has dozens of skilled and reputable submitters that get 10s about 2% of the time (as expected) while a handful of customers magically achieve 10-20 card runs of pristines?

I guessing maybe the grader won't lower the card grade if they themselves damage the card condition?

This post needs attention. This has the chance to be an absolutely iconic card. But it’s just wrong. That centering is not even close to 9.5 worthy, never mind 10.

There isn't a PSA 10 that's perfectly centered either.

Maybe BGS looking to start being PSA and not caring as much about centering. More 10’s = More business.

The difference is PSA allows for 60/40 on centering. I don’t think they should be that liberal, but it’s not my company so it’s at least justifiable based on their guidelines.

I’m not sure that Beckett outlines their parameters for what constitutes a “10” centering sub grade, but the implication of “Pristine” tells me it needs to be 50/50.

The only bright side to cards like this is that the market is starting to take notice. I've been buying PSA 9s of certain tough-to-grade cards (specifically OC) for a bit, and I've noticed some pretty significant price differences between 9's. Some of that has to do with the potential of crossing 9's to bgs 9.5s, but I would imagine a card like that will not get the same premium as other black labels (even though it doesn't deserve much more than a 9.5 ).

BGS says a pristine 10 has to be 50/50 both ways on the front and at least 60/40 on the back. A 9.5 centering has to be 50/50 one way and 55/45 the other on the front. Same 60/40 on the back.

You’d hope so but a lot of the new people will buy based only on the label. Will it matter years down the road, not sure...

Buy the slab, not the content of character.

It’s either incompetence at best or a scam at worst. If BGS is anything like PSA, multiple people have to review a card before it’s slabbed. Particularly with a black label you would expect the most senior grader to review the card to catch it and say no this isn’t 50/50 centering.

Does it also seem to slightly taper in at the top left corner? It seems less than straight.

Cant compare a psa 10 to a bgs black label, 2 different grades. BGS should be ashamed. I would not be shocked if BGS did not exist in 10 years.
