Panini to eliminate player-specific redemptions and add patch database

LAS VEGAS – Panini America is upping its digital game.
It introduced Panini Rewards and a patch database at the 2014 Industry Summit on Tuesday.
The biggest element from Panini Rewards is that Panini is eliminating player-specific redemptions. Collectors will instead get a card with a point value where collectors can then go on the Panini site or app to redeem the points for cards available.
The program will begin May and be available on smartphones (IOS and Android) and on its website.

“The Panini Rewards Program is a truly revolutionary development for the entire trading card industry and will offer us the chance to effectively eliminate and further reduce redemption cards from our products, replacing them with Panini Reward Points that collectors can use to acquire any available card immediately,” said Panini America CE Mark Warsop in a release. “This program has been in development for nearly two years and we are excited to finally share it with collectors.”
The program will begin in May with the release of 2014 Score Football. Points are accrued the cards found in packs and collectors can obtain single cards, items or Panini experiences
In addition, points will never expire. Reward cards will be produced in NFL, NBA and MLBPA products.
The patch database will be for high-end cards. Panini will take high-resolution images of prime patches and place a small QR code on the back of cards. Collectors can scan those codes and find the image of the card as it comes off the line from Panini. If the card does not match the image, it’s a fake patch card.
A patch database has been an element collectors have asked for because of the proliferation of fake cards on the secondary market. Panini America will do one for high-end releases now.

when they say they're going to eliminate "player-specific redemptions," what they really mean is they are going to eliminate players who don't sign.

the question is, will they announce final checklists before they release a product?

will they let collectors know that a couple of the top rookies will not be included in their National Treasures product? or that Kyrie will not be in some basketball product?

don't get me wrong, i think it's great to eliminate redemptions for players they never intend to fill... but will they be honest about it? i doubt it.

So are the points cards going to be randomly inserted? Will they eliminate a hit?

For example, Instead of getting the 4 guaranteed hits in a box. Will you get 3 and a points card? I guess my question here is if they are eliminating redemption's and the points cards will not be player specific whats the point of even putting them in the products?

good question. sounds like it will replace a hit. there doesn't seem to be any other connection unless they're both hits.

As long as their old player redemptions still don't expire, I'm up for anything. Love that about them-keeps me buying older products from them knowing if I get a redemption that expired a year or so ago that it's still good.

I hate Panini having a monopoly and then issuing so many releases for the same sport every year.

I wish that the sports leagues would issue non-exclusive licenses to Upper Deck, Panini and Topps, then limit the number of releases (produce lines) per year to a max of 3 (which includes a Series 1, Series, 2 or any Updates), forcing the card companies to be competitive with each other, come up with better products and earn hobby business from the consumer.

I'm glad redemptions are on the way out, so we get points to redeem for live product rather than continue waiting for years only to get offered inferior substitutions for the original redemption.

I think Digital cards as I understand them to be are fairly stupid if they carry any value yet can't be redeemed/converted to a real physical card.

Heck I haven't seen Panini Rewards updated in probably 2 months. Lot of good the points do when there is nothing to use them on that hasn't been on there forever.
