Default When It Hurts: Selling a former top prospect who is out of baseball

I've had a decent collection of Jordan Schafer cards listed on eBay for what feels like literally forever. Just been lowering the price every month or so.

Anyway, I got a very acceptable offer today ... and for whatever reason, I just don't want to let it go. It doesn't really make any logical sense. The sale price is so low (relative to prior value) that I don't want to sell. It's ridiculous because the only reasonable alternative is I keep these cards forever.

Anyway, just lamenting.

There's still a chance those Todd Van Poppel cards are going to pay for my retirement!

Only if he goes on a multi-state murder spree or assassinates the President. I'm a die-hard A's fan. I wouldn't take them.

He was never a top prospect, but my guy was Jordan Tata. He had a great spring training, and started off good early season. Eventually broke his hand after a bad start, and was never the same.

I've got a pretty strong Devon Travis collection. He's not officially done yet and I'm hoping that with a full healthy season he can still turn it around, but if not, I've decided I'm going to try to send most of my collection to him or his parents. Not sure if they'd want it but I'd much prefer trying that to selling it for peanuts.

To be fair, all prospects are out of Baseball right now.

(I've got the night to myself, putzing around the internet)

So the ultimate question is whether or not this collection buys you anything positive. If the answer is yes, then it's likely more than the pittance of the offer and you should hold.

If however, the answer is no; then you can take that money and buy something positive. Outside the box.

For me these days, it's as simple as that.

One day I‘ll dig up my Delmon collection to show. It’ll make the entire hobby cringe. A few of you might throw up. Some might even want to gouge their eyes out.

Alex White.

Still don't know what I was thinking. Have like 10 BC blue autos. Didn't really pay a ton for them, but still....must have been a drug infused chapter of my life or something.

Went from being ok....to bad...to injured...to dui's...to a distant memory.

We had 500 Jake Marisnick Elite Auto Rookies.

We still have 40 left, but sold the rest.

This reminded me of this tweet. It was a painful time as a Twins fan.

Aw man. I'll see your Jordan Schafer and raise you a Chuck James. I've still got a stack of his stuff somewhere. 1/1's,autos you name it.
Now that I think about it, WHO THE HELL IS TRYING TO BUY THEM?? It's gotta be someone that's a fan of that Dental billboard that he is somehow still on that you can see when you go north on 75 away from the city.

I remember in the olden days of FCB that a poster there had a Trout collection that was just jaw dropping at the time of 2009 Chrome Autos and variations. The value on those present days must be in the millions. Stacks and stacks of base autos and pages and pages of color. I wonder about what happened to that guy sometimes, but can't go back and locate who it was and where they exited the market. I remember the same with a guy hoarding Matt Wieters 2007 EEE autos almost like an attempt at a complete run. The prospect hoarding has always been strange to me, but those two stick out.

I remember being so certain that Kila Ka'aihue was going to be a big time hitter in the majors. He was posting 1.00+ ops seasons at AAA and just never caught on. Kyle Blanks was another. And there's nothing wrong with keeping them if they're meaningful to you. If they remind you of a period of your life that you recall fondly, that's literally what makes you a collector and not an investor. I have tons of cards that are worth diddly squat now that would have been huge cards back in the day just to remind myself of the truism that is the difference between prospects and established players.

Plus, sometimes you get the opportunity to go and buy cards that you dreamed about having at the time but could never afford. I wanted one of those Topps Chrome Jay Bruce Red variations for the longest time and thought they would be forever out of reach. It's all part of what memories mean the most to you. Nostalgia is what reminds you that these aren't stock options.
