Has anyone here watched "The News"?
It's on almost every channel. They have a new episode every night. Some of the scariest stuff I've ever watched. I usually turn it off just so I can sleep at night. I love horror, but I feel like this series might actually lead to some really dark mental health issues. I think I'm just going to avoid it from now on. |

I catch it everyone once in a while. It definitely has that nightmare feel to it but the main villain is a little over the top for me (good makeup, though!). I do like those surreal cutaways where the lady in her garage talks about the weather and the other guy speaks wistfully about sports that used to exist.

Itsy Bitsy on Amazon Prime.
You know what, I'm going to give this film an A-, if nothing else for it's willingness to use practical effects and puppets. The key to this movie is to go in with SyFy Channel expectations. It may be an homage to 1980s monster movies, but if you go in that standard you'll probably be disappointed. However, it is still much better than your average SyFy flick. - Acting: For a movie, it's pretty wooden. But it's never so bad that it takes you out of the story or makes you want to turn it off. It's really only noticeable when someone is yelling at someone else and it just doesn't seem like their heart is really in it. - Atmosphere: Pretty sleek. The setting (an old farm house) doesn't require a big budget and the filmmakers were able to craft a film that's on par with most of the moody, brooding post-2010 horror flicks. The movie looks modern. The opening scene in the jungle certainly isn't Indiana Jones-quality, but again, you'll be more than satisfied if you go in with the right expectations. - Creature Effects: I loved it! I haven't looked to see who was in charge of this, but for a low-budget film this was one of the top three instances I've seen of blending conservative CGI with maximal practical effects. (The Void probably being #1 among recent indie films.) It's not Steven-Spielberg-hiding-an-anamatronic-T-Rex-in-the-rain-at-night level genius, but it's 100x more entertaining that 99% of the PS2-cutscene-level, CGI monsters that we've seen everywhere for the last 20 years. There are only a handful of frames where it is obvious that the monster spider is a puppet, but these only add to the campy fun. For this movie the director wasn't afraid to show off his monster (we see it early and often) and best of all: it actually behaves in a believable manner. When it bites people, they are obviously poisoned and become weakened prey. The script doesn't play any favors to heroes either. No characters gets bit and then shrugs it off. And with the one character who doesn't end up poisoned, it makes it clear that the reason they weren't was because the fangs pierced all the way through their flesh before the venom was released. (It was not a scene I was expecting.) Again, this isn't a modern horror classic. But it's a darn good popcorn flick for quarantine. |

Some of the best new ideas for movies are found in horror films.

They actually get the untouched dessert all the way back to the kitchen for the ultimate protest. Using the scene actually filmed when the head chef finds the hair in the same(?) dessert, the kitchen, instead of understanding the incredible sacrifice the inmates undertook to make their point, it's all been for nothing: the kitchen thinks the dessert made it all the way down and back up only because the inmates all saw the hair and were too grossed out to eat it, like customer at a restaurant. The status quo remains. The head chef figures out which cook's hair it was in the dessert and we cut to that poor SOB waking up on level 250.

I do like the idea of even in a sadistic prison like this one, patrons still complain and essentially "demand to speak to the manager." Something along the lines of—not only do we treat our fellow man terribly—but we would drag the deities out of heaven and lodge our complaints if we could. |

Watched The Nun last night for about the 20th time. Yea, I like it.
Also watched They Come at Dusk. It's a "man like monster on an uninhabited island" type thing. One of it's few pluses is it has the cute mechanic girl from "Fire Fly" in it. |

The Nun. Great choice. There is something about the movie's setting which is great in its own right. In my mind they absolutely nailed it.

Also, watched "The Void" last night. Good movie, but confusing at times. Especially the end. |

Watched "Underwater" last night. Not all that bad considering it had Kristen Stewart in it. She has one facial expression. Every single movie she does. ONE EXPRESSION. Anyways....
It had a "Alien/Godzilla/Leviathan" vibe to it. Sounds weird but once you watch it you'll understand. |

Come on guys! This thread needs some new life! I watched "Sea Fever" last night. Pretty good but slow at times. Kind of an "eco revenge" vibe to it.
Also watched the Night Stalker made for TV, Darren McGavin, movies on YouTube. Very good movies for free. |

Watch "Leviathan" a few nights ago.
If you absolutely love Alien and The Thing—and you have a high tolerance for utterly shameless rip-offs—check it out. Instead of some miners sent into deep space by a corrupt corporation (Alien), it's a bunch of miners sent into the deep sea by a corrupt corporation. Once they're down there, everything else that happens is literally just the plot of The Thing. Right down to the monster itself. Also, they do Ernie Hudson's character so wrong at the end. You basically have to read the script to realize that he was sacrificing himself rather than just randomly dying with two minutes of runtime remaining. |

Not horror, but sci-fi/mystery .... "The Vast of Night" on Prime. Excellent movie I was able to watch with all the kiddos (just bleeping out one F-bomb at 54:04).
