We threw away the economy and peoples lives for that. AND we marched the people with the virus into nursing homes.

If I Had lost a business to this shutdown and lost my home, my ability to feed my family, basically nothing to lose, then saw the person that destroyed my life by shutting down, marching in a crowd of thousands while preaching to stay home, I dont know what I would do. I hope they hire extra security though, because I could easily see someone with nothing else to lose going after them.

There are already academic fields under the umbrella of "environmental humanities" (where I work) devoted to this very argument.

You can search "environmental justice" or "eco justice."

Not to virtue signal , but to give an example of how the culture wars warp our perspective of major issues through their either/or, black/white, red/blue, for/against framing—here's a text convo I just had with one of my "defund the police" friends:

"1. I believe that black lives do matter and that a myriad of historical injustices have produced our present society in which, despite many advances in justice and equality, those lives are still generally valued less, generally shorter, and generally filled with more hardship.

2. I believe in general our police force is in need of reform, though I oppose the popular trend of dehumanizing these individuals (even as their increasingly militarized appearance makes their human features less apparent).

3. As with virtually every battle line drawn in our culture wars, the dichotomous choices we are presented with are not only inaccurate but they serve to enflame our baser natures while numbing our consciences through perceived self-righteousness.

4. Given that black lives do matter, I began reviewing the leading causes of preventable deaths that disproportionately affect minorities. Drowning is one of the top three causes of preventable deaths among individuals 0-29 years of age and black children (5-14) drown at roughly 3x the rate of white children.

5. Overall, the 10-year study by the CDC found that 4,130 African Americans (0-29) drowned at a rate of 1.90 per 100,000. White drownings occurred at a rate of 1.32 per 100,000. Setting aside the controversial WaPo statistics and going with the higher Mapping Police Violence count of 28 unarmed African Americans killed by police in 2019, we see that African Americans are still almost 5x more likely to die from pools than police. (And that is if we consider all 28 deaths to be racially motivated.)

6. As a result, I just placed a donation with a national swimming organization that offers lessons specifically to minorities. I did so, again, because I believe that black lives do matter, that the police are humans operating within an institution in need of reform, and that our culture wars have no coercive claim to power over my own thoughts and convictions."
