I'm in fly over country and the skies have been empty until this week. Not quite normal traffic but it has really picked up

I don't think the goal has ever changed. Maintaining the curve or maintaining hospital capacity is all part of the process.

Think of it in dieting terms. You might take extreme measures to lose the initial weight, but then you start to loosen it up again and maybe moderate your "junk" intake to a level where the weight can be maintained. If you flipped a switch and just hammered the fast food and desserts right away you'd gain all the weight back within days and possibly even more than you started with.

We are now starting to ease back in. I think the lasting impact will be in the area of cleaning and sanitation. School buildings, for example, will likely make permanent changes to how they clean their buildings and that's where maintenance is akin to making a permanent a lifestyle change without feeling like you are "on a diet" for the rest of your life.

Won't there be calls for the re-opening experiments to cease if the deaths go up, though (which seems inevitable)?

I don't think in most places it has. It is not an all or nothing. Some States are starting to open back up others hit much harder are waiting a bit longer. Obviously there is a concern that opening too much too fast would create an even worse case scenario. It is going to be a slow phased in approach in most places so they can measure each step and adjust appropriately. There is obviously going to be different opinions on what is too slow or too fast. It is what it is I guess. This is unique because every State is in a different phase so to speak. This is why I was really hoping for a more uniform approach from the start. Everyone is now on different timetables.

Yes! No deaths from the virus can be tolerated! Every other cause, well, that's just the way it goes - BUT NOT THE VIRUS!!

THE VIRUS IS DEATH!!

That would depend on how significant the spike is. Even the most careful states (Ohio for example) are warning that deaths will go up, but keeping that death toll within a reasonable range will decide how quickly the process can happen.

IMO there's no reason to keep non-essential businesses completely closed. If Giant Eagle, Lowe's, Target, and NTB can operate safely using the many safety measures we have seen implemented, then why shouldn't Graham's Flower Shop, Kohl's, Hobby Lobby, and DMV have the same chance? We can ease into this without seeing a massive spike in cases or deaths as long as we are careful.

Same goes for the flu.

What we do know - public officials take the virus serious

Why wouldn’t the public take the advice of the leaders again? 9/11 we trusted them and we should continue to do so now

I'm just worried that the people's reactions (loudest in the room types) will become too much once those deaths start to become official. Maybe I'm wrong. But it's difficult to move forward since we've already taken a strong one-way stance as a whole country. All states are different, though. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, right?

The numbers are now trash and they aren’t even trying to hide it. They are intentionally inflating the numbers but some people are too blinded by fear to take note of the fact.

You have extreme opinions on both sides so probably yes. I guess really though it depends on how much and how fast they go up.

If a ship sinks with 300 people and you only recover 50 bodies, the other 250 are going to get a "probable cause" designation, mostly likely drowning. Sure, maybe a few hit their heads on the way down and died of blunt force but nobody is going to argue that the vast majority didn't drown.

People act like the politicians are the ones coding deaths. I highly doubt the front line doctors and coroners are making stuff up for political reasons. They are doing their best. The numbers are not as inflated as some are suggesting.

And the governors sticking to their guns, too. Assuming things don't go completely off the rails.

And how many of those are "probable" deaths now? They have made it clear that they are manipulating and inflating the numbers now with "probable" deaths because they knew the death numbers weren't going to be large enough to justify the mass shutdown. Some people are just too blind to see that they are manipulating figures now.
