Default What percent of 1990s high end boxes do you think are still unopened?

This is my first post, hope this is ok to ask. Just wondering how much you guys think is still out there. Some of these boxes had large print runs, others were much smaller runs. Do you think most of it is opened and the rare inserts are just sitting in closets or trash heaps? Or even in monster boxes of older card shops that have been long forgotten? Would you guess that 10-15% of it is unopened, or is that way off? Thanks!!

I'm a huge fan of breaking older hockey products... yeah I know we pay a huge amount of breakers tax but its worth it. A few drawbacks to consider: 1) Cards potentially coming damaged/sticking 2) expired redemptions

I personally just get one box, open it for fun realize it was a waste of $$$, and keep the empty box (still worth it for me). Then just buy what I want from the set

Nothing better than pulling a major PC card instead of buying/trading for it

Topps Chrome and Finest I think was considered premium at the time too. A better question to ask might have been all boxes from the mid to late 90s. Upper Deck, Ultra, Skybox, Metal, etc. How much of that run do you guys think is still sealed? There was a lot of that stuff produced. Used to show up at Kay-Bee toys, Toys r Us, and other outlets after the seasons. Wish I would have stashed some of that stuff away back then. Sure would be fun to bust it open!!

Less. I'd say under 2%, maybe under 1% is still unopened and undestroyed.

Not high end, but there are rumors that significantly more than 10% of some products around the time of the lockout were returned to the manufacturer and destroyed. This is not something that I can confirm in any way. But definitely is believed by some.

Very interesting. Some of the boxes and packs for "high end" cards could be had for very little money back in the day. If Timmy bought a box and didn't pull a Michael Jordan or current All-Star, I bet he trashed it, like me and my friends did.

And what percentage of what is left is not bricked together, assuming proper storage and all. That's the issue I've run into with older wax now. Flexing a stack of UD to break them apart in high end stuff would be awful.

I have a bunch of that stuff, sealed from 1997-1999. I think you guys would be surprised with other collectors that do the same. I’d say it’s higher than most think, maybe 15-20 percent.

No one knows for sure..........so all these posts of 3%, 10%, 13% are PURE speculation.
I do think at this point it would be pretty low though. There's still plenty to be ripped cuz I think the low end product boxes we're prob produced at 1-2 million boxes and even the scarcer stuff was up there. That being said, the price on these boxes and the odds of hitting something monumental are extremely low. It's getting to the point where keeping it sealed is the way to go much like vintage baseball. There are a handful of products still (relatively) decently priced for ripping sake...........but for the most part, you're gonna lose BIG TIME busting most wax that has coveted serial number sets..............I'll end this by saying, I busted a ton of stuff this past year and pulled some amazing cards.............and the thrill is undeniably PURE JOY

Have you heard 1-2 million boxes from a specific source? That seems extremely high. I did some calculations on ex-2001 once and estimated there were most likely around 50,000 boxes produced give or take a few thousand. 50,000 for any product really isnt too many.
