Default Price Check: Damaged Mickey Mantle autographed photo? (Pics included)

First some background info:
  • Bought this photo for $300 in early 2019
  • Photo was in mint condition and has a sharp/bold autograph
  • Photo has all the proper authentication documents
  • I recently took the photo to a big-box retailer to have it framed
  • Freak accident happens and worker damages the photo with pen
  • Damage includes ink and also two indents from the point of the pen

Big-box retailer is offering me two options for compensation:
  1. Reimburse me the entire $300 in full but they keep the photo
  2. Reimburse me $150 for my trouble and I keep the photo

So if the photo is worth more than roughly $175 in it's current state then it might be worth it for me to collect the $150 and then sell the photo.

I really have no idea how much this damage affects the price though.

Should I just collect my $300 or could I still get $175+ easily (don't want to sit on it waiting for it to sell) for the photo in its current state?

---

you take the $175 if you want to keep it and it doesn't bother you. If you were ever thinking about resale purposes you take the $300 and start over.

Mantle signed photos aren't rare by any stretch so its replaceable

Sometimes people remove Sharpie ink from photos using the 'dry erase marker' method (there are videos on YouTube showing how they do it). Im not sure if it works for all types of markers though (I've never tried it). Considering it's a Mantle autograph, I wouldn't want to start messing around with it without knowing for sure what kind of marker made those marks. But it might be possible to remove them and keep the autograph.

Taking measurements for the matte... The photo was out of the toploader because the worker wanted to see its accurate color.

It was a young person. They were clearly upset and felt awful. It's definitely annoying but accidents happen. The store and the office have been very apologetic and the process (so far) has been easy.

Well the photo is intended as a gift. If I decide to keep the photo then I am 100% selling it and purchasing a new photo. But I will only go that route if I know it's worth more than $175.

I don't think you would get $150 for it. Try to get more from them.

you really can't give it as a gift damaged cause it'll make you look bad and if you have to sell it you have to deal with aggravation of explaining the ink mark so I think you have your answer

They offered you a decent out all things considered

How glossy is the photo? You may be able to take the new ink off, depending. I would 100% take #2 as think this is fixable and would be unnoticeable in a frame
