Default 2019-2020 Minnesota Wild season thread

Not sure if I'm the only Wild fan left around here, but I can have fun talking to myself too

Last season was rough. Rough performance and tough trades. I'm quite pleased to see Fenton get the boot. Some of the things I've read about him are terrifying. No idea how get got the job in the first place. Guerin hasn't been here long, but he's impressed me so far, mainly with a nice extension to Spurgeon. Hopefully his next big goal is to make amends with Zucker and make sure he sticks around.

Overall I think this team still has some talent, but we'll have to see what we'll get. They won't be dominant, and our division is still insanely packed with talent. But if all goes well I think we could sneak into the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed. Really will rely on how much the young guys step up- JEE, Greenway, Donato, etc. I dunno, we seem far too talented to only get 80ish points on the year, but I'd be really surprised to see us in the high 90s pushing 100. We'll just have to see what we get.

I’m a Wild PC person.... ok... we are both from Minnesota so it’s a two person convo now.

I’ll post some opinions later.

So for starters, Fenton screwed everything up. Nino for Rask is a joke and Granny for Fiala was terrible. Did think Coyle for Donato was a good trade until Coyle had his best postseason ever. With Bill Gurien coming in, I think this will be good.

...

As for last night, that sucked. 2-1 lead to a 5-2 loss. Get prepared for a lot more losing than last year Wild fans.

As much as I hate to say it, I think this is going to be a long tough year. I like Guerin and I think he will get us on the right path, it is just going to take some time for it all to happen. As I said last year, I still think we need to do a major overhaul compared to just some minor tweaks and changes. This team just does not have the scoring power to do anything. Unless Dubnyk and the D stand on their heads overnight and give up only 2 goals or less, we are not going to be able to compete in games.

I agree with Spinz that Fenton did screw a lot of things up, but we are still feeling the effects of what Fletcher did prior to. As much as I like Parise and Suter, those two contract are really going to hurt for a long time.

Finally in the win column today! The defense played well. Hopefully the offense can pick it up in the next few games and score some more goals.

OMG do we look horrible tonight. Guys are running around like they don't know what they are doing. I have not seen any other games this year, but if this is any indication I can see why we have 1 win.

Just wondering how long Boudreau will last if this is how they are playing. As I said I think it is going to be a long year, but that still won't deter me from cheering for them.

This is gonna be a real long year. Can't undo what Fenton did last year. There's more to it than that, but some of his moves last year set us back a few more years

I am a wild fan but dont get to watch games much as i am living in colorado now, but root for home teams. Havent followed it to closely since i havent lived in minnesota for 19 years, but catch a game here and there. I actually started buying wild inscriptions and getting partially back into collecting pc items and pausing on vikings football for while. I will only be collecting inscriptions for now, even if they are in a former team's uniform.

Much better over the past 2 games. Hockey in particular just seems so much more difficult to stay invested when your team isn't competitive, so hopefully this is a sign it was more of a slow start. Not expecting a playoff run by any means, but would be fun if we could at least be competitive this season

Well the squad started out pretty bad, starting 4-9-1, but since then (start of November), they've actually been pretty good, going 8-2-3 to get us up to 12-11-4 overall. Currently on a 9-game point streak. I still don't really have high hopes or expectations for the playoffs, but it's so much nicer when they're playing competitively

Special shoutout to Mikko Koivu, who scored the winning shootout goal tonight in his 1,000th NHL game! He's represented us so well in his career

Apparently this year the Wild became the 2nd team in NHL history to have 20 of our first 30 games on the road. Brutal. Sure took awhile to get going, but with the slow start and having such a tough schedule, that's not so bad a start to the season all things considered. 11-game point streak and 5-game win streak was snapped last night, though

Spurgeon out for awhile with a broken hand, and Koivu banged up for a few weeks. Just when we were really getting rolling, too

I agree it has been a roller coaster of a season to start and they are on a roll now as well. It is always nice to see them win, even if it goes against what I would like to see happen to this team. I still think we are too many pieces away to be really competitive and would like to see some major changes to the team, but if they play well I don't feel that will be in the cards for this season. See how it goes and it will be interesting to see what Mr. Guerin is thinking as well as the trade deadline approaches.

Never in a million years would I have thought the team would be this competitive especially after the start they have. I like the direction that Guerin is going, and it will be interesting to see if he keeps Boudreau or goes and finds "his own coach"

Well at the break, it's been an up and down year. Started off horrendously, but then they had a stellar run to get back in the mix. Then a bit of a rough patch, and then just kind of treading water since then

Overall, 23-21-6 probably isn't terrible at this point after starting 1-6. Sitting at 52 points, which is just 1 point ahead of last in the division but only 2 points behind 4th. Our division continues to be super tough

Will be interesting if we make any notable moves at the trade deadline. We've continued to be in a weird spot as a franchise. Unfortunately at the end of the day, this is looking like another year where we'll be not good enough to make the playoffs (or get bounced right away if we do), but not bad enough to get a high draft pick. Sound familiar?

I am with you, it will be interesting what, if anything, we do come the trade deadline. I think if we continue to tread water as we have lately, we will more than likely be sellers at the deadline and I think there could be some major moves. Guerin has no emotional ties to any of these players as he is not the one who signed them or drafted them so I could see any of them on the trading block. I do think he will be smart about it though and it will not be a firesale. I also think if we finish the season like we are playing now, Boudreau will be let go as well. The more I see this team play, the more I continue to think this team needs to be blown up and start from scratch. Personally I do not see any 1st or 2nd line guys on this team and a few of them could be 3rd or 4th line guys. I like the way Brodin has been playing and Soucy as well. The problem for the next few years though are those 2 albatross contacts of Suter and Parise.

Guerin needs to tear this team down. It's frustrating to say that because I actually like a bunch of the pieces we have, but it's clear that this group isn't cutting it

At the same time, who do we have to build around? Zucker, Spurgeon, and Dumba (maybe Zuckarello, but his earnings seems a bit high, granted I'm not as well versed in NHL contracts) are the only guys on reasonable contracts for more than just next year, but for the same reason those would be the guys we could get the most in trade- and it's clear we need to bring in some hauls. I really like JEE and Donato, but they're both only under contract through next season. Foligno is having a great year but I don't know if we can trust that or not. Beyond them, I don't know if there's any great pieces to build around unless we keep Zuck/Spurge/Dumba, and if we do keep them, how are we going to make any progress?

Aside just as I'm looking at it again, FFS was that Nino for Rask trade bad. Saved a little bit of money, but not much, and Rask is so not good. Fenton really effed this team over last year

The tear down may have begun. Zucker to the Penguins. Guerin might be trying to get some draft picks back that the prior GM's got rid of. Granted it will not be a low first round pick, but it is a first round pick. I will be interested to see what else he does.

I'm so sad we're losing Zucker But this is what it's going to take. This roster needs an overhaul. There's a bunch of pieces I like that we probably should send off for longer term assets/better fits

I wish Zuck the absolute best! Hopefully he gets to lift the trophy this spring

Yeah, not thrilled about losing Zucker, but I think in Addison and a 1st rounder, it gives the Wild a start to things it seems to have never had under the old regime...picks and prospects.

I think they are freeing up space for Kaprisov, only fitting that he and Zucker happen to both be LW. Galchenyuk also play C I believe that may play a factor when they undoubtedly don’t extent Koivu contract. Don’t forget we just may not protect some players coming up for that Seattle expansion.I’m also a wild PC.

Whats the deal with Kaprizov, would be nice if he came over. As for the Zucker trade I think they got a nice return on him. Im curious if Dumba gets traded. I know they are knocking on the door of a playoff spot but he certainly would have some nice trade value. Trust me, I feel the pain of Zucker getting traded because I felt the same when Coyle got moved.
