I'll buy your Acuna cards.

Yep. His prices utterly cratered when other players like Michael Chavis and Austin Riley did, you know, the EXACT SAME THING as Yordan.

I think we'll be ok.

I just don’t see them falling. Why anybody would worry about Acunas current production at 21 years old is beyond me.

Acuna is different than the next "hot thing"

Seems hard for people to understand that.

What? Acuna’s a scrub? I always have a soft spot for scrubs.

Look, we all know this is how the game is played. Acuna is no different. He needs to start producing at the level priced into his card prices or they will fall. There's no such thing as "this time it's different."

Acuna has benefitted tremendously from being the only shiny thing on the street. Soto, while a very nice player, was never really competition card wise. While having nice power, he's not a monster power hitter so he was never a real threat to Acuna. Using Chavis and Riley as comps? You can't be serious.

Now we have the first true threat. The age thing? Guess what? Alvarez is the same age so there goes that argument. Acuna has a window to start producing while Alvarez has so few cards out. But as the year goes on and more key Alvarez cards release, you'll see the money start the leave Acuna and chase Alvarez. People go where there is money to be made. This isn't rocket science.

My point is simply Acuna needs to start producing at a higher level. While he's having a "nice" year, that doesn't cut it card land. He's hit, what, 7 HRs in his last 132 ABs? While "nice", that won't support these card prices long term.

In his last 10 games:

5 multi hit games
4 homeruns
11 rbi
3 2B

Braves are 8-2 and overtook 1st place.

Alvarez has played like 5 games. Sell all your Acuna cards and buy Yordan's. Put your money where your mouth is.

Alvarez wont have any RCs this year, short of Topps reversing policy

Curious what level of production would support his card prices for you? I mean he’s on pace for 30+ hrs and about 20SB at 21. You think 40 hrs at 21? 50?

So you think Acuna's prices will climb if he continues the same performance to date for the year?

Absolutely.

Also, to add some context to your "same age as Acuna comment", Yordan turns 22 in like 2 weeks. Acuna turns 22 in December.

Again, Yordan has played 5 games.

Yeesh. Taking a quick look at the Yordan thread, he's already getting comps to Pujols. After 5 games.

Were we that annoying with Acuna last year?

This is a good question. But in card land I think there are two important questions:

1) What is the expected performance of a player reflected in prices
2) What are the alternatives for investment.

My point with the start of this thread is that for the first time in card land, we have true competition for question #2 based both in terms of age, long term hitting prospects and most importantly, HR's that make people oooh and ahhh on highlights.

Exactly my point. People gravitate to the next shiny thing.

Acuna thread is on page 482.

Yordan thread is on page 9.

Where was all the Yordan hype PRIOR to 4HR in 5 games? That's the difference.

Edited to add a little more context. Since the date the Yordan thread was created, the Acuna thread has grown nearly 150 pages.

I think it's hard to use historical popularity as a metric for future pricing/popularity. These things shift based on a player's performance.

I really didn't think I was stating something outlandish that Acuna's performance needs to improve to justify his pricing or the industry will lose interest, but I guess I did

Alvarez looks like a baller, but the hobby is increasingly more mindful of "complete" players. WAR totals generate MVP consideration, and Acuna came ready-built with defense. His bat is still developing, and he's streaky, but he won't live or die by how many homeruns he hits in a 100 AB stretch. Its how a player like Mookie Betts can struggle at the plate, but come roaring back when he goes on a tear. It would also explain the current gap in the market between Soto and Acuna (though I suspect Soto's defense will improve with time, as will the demand).

Not bagging on Alvarez - the guy looks great, and he, like Acuna, is playing for a contender.

I think we're all just a little confused as to why you believe his current performance isn't very good for his age. Also, his Update cards are, what, $14?
