Default Wife just got a job in Detroit.

I've never been there (other than the airport). I work in the casino industry, and I know the value of keeping your own tips versus pooling them. Are there any casino workers on here? Or does anyone on here know if there is a casino that keeps their own? Also suggestions on nicer areas to live?

Any help or suggestions with living in the area would be great. Also, I will still be cheering for my MN sports teams. Is there a bar I can watch the games at?

My sister lives in Warren, Michigan which I believe is a suburb of Detroit.
There's parts of Detroit they don't care for at all but seem to like where they're at now.
Sorry, no help on the casino info.

People in Detroit tend to dislike Minnesota teams.

There is plenty of affordable housing in Highland Park, Inkster, and Delray areas.

Anything inside Eight Mile Rd. is also a good rule of thumb for price considerations.

Is divorce an option so you can stay in MN?

What games do you deal?

I tricked the girl of my dreams into marrying me, there is no way I would divorce her.

I deal everything except craps and roulette. Those are illegal in MN.

My guess is that with her taking a job in Detroit she is trying to trick you into divorcing her.

Don't let these guys scare you, Detroit isn't near what it's reputation is anymore.

Yes, there are definitely parts that aren't good, but as a whole, the city is WAY better than it's reputation, I've worked in downtown Detroit for the better part of the past decade and it's really a nice place now.

Tons of new restaurants, offices, and stores along Woodward which has brought a total resurgence to the area as a whole.

No idea your budget for housing (or your age) but lots of nice places to live out in the suburbs which is only a 20-30 minute drive to downtown without rush hour traffic (upwards of an hour with it), such as the Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham area a little north of the city, as well as the Livonia area more to the north-west (not quite as nice, but more of a quiet area for families where as the first areas I said are mostly the younger crowd).

If you like more of a rural area you can go even further north and there is a ton of nice wide open property there, and still about 1-1.5 hour drive to downtown with traffic (around 45 minutes with none). My boss lives out that way and while he hates the traffic on bad days, he lives in a really nice area with a ton of space.

Tons of places to watch your sports teams (this is still one of the biggest cities in the country), really just comes down to where you live, but always have the big chains with the full channel packages (I go to BWW for all my Panthers games).

In short, don't let anyone scare you, Detroit isn't "Detroit" anymore, it's been on a major upswing the past 10ish years, with a massive explosion in the past 3-5 years that has really improved the downtown area.

Thanks for this. I'm fairly nervous. I'm 48 and have lived in the Twin Cities most of my life. The only other moves I made were when I was going to college, and then again when I cam back to the cities 15 years later. Hell, I did my moving in multiple trips with a pickup and trailer.

I would love to live in the country, but my wife is a city girl. We will likely end up in a suburb. Is south Detroit any good? Our housing budget is probably about $300k. It can be a little more if need be, but we have 2 paid off houses right now, and aren't used to paying a payment. We will be selling one of them to use for the new place.

$300K? Enjoy your new mansion! Or you can buy 20 homes and just rent them out

Or just buy 1 and use the rest of the money to replace your rims every month or so.

Where in Detroit (huge area) does your wife work? Downtown? Suburb? Dearborn? Royal Oak? Southfield?

Stay away from Inkster as that area is a bunch of low income/govt housing.

Taylor/Southgate is an ok area but a bit of a drive to Downtown.

Romulus is by the Airport

Dearborn can be a ritzy neighborhood (thanks to Ford Motor Company) if you live in Dearborn proper. Dearborn does have an industrial side of town (FoMoCo Rouge Complex). Unless you're muslim, you might want to keep clear of South Dearborn.

Southfield is just north of Dearborn but not as pricey.

Hope this helps a little,

It's good to have a healthy fear of certain areas. There are some areas of Detroit where You Will be killed if you walk down the street at night. I hate that it is a fact, but unfortunately that is the world we live in. The police do not enter those areas at night. I lived in Metro Detroit for 30 years. On the flip side there are some nice surrounding suburbs. My suggestion would be to look for a place above 12 Mile Road. Obviously the further from 8 Mile (Detroit City Limit) you get the safer you will feel.

I went on zillow for fun and was shocked how many homes in foreclosure had prices of $1k or $5k. $300k could buy half the city

There really isn't a "South Detroit" as due south of downtown Detroit is Canada, there is "downriver" but that is technically east really, and no, it's not where you want to go.

Your best bet is to look at Royal Oak, Ferndale, Berkley, Birmingham general area, in your budget you'll find some really nice homes and be a very manageable drive to downtown (again depends where your wife will be working, but if you're looking for work at the casinos, it makes sense).

Or you can get a nice Condo downtown, there are some REALLY nice places downtown now, but also very very pricey.

There's no South Detroit. Steve Perry just made that #@#@#@#@ up.

I'm with one of the other posters. Where exactly is your wife's job? Is it in the City of Detroit city limits? Or one of the surrounding suburbs?

There definitely are places you do not want any part of. Good luck with your move.

This can be said about any major metropolis. We have people killing each other in Los Angeles because of Dodger/LAA games. But Detroit is violent.

Others have said it, but lots of nice areas in the metro area.

A lot really depends on where her job is and/or if you're going to look into commuting into the casino's for employment. But also with that is how far you want to commute (time/distance). But you have a lot of options.

While transportation I think is Detroits limiting issue (if your 100% auto then youre good to go), but really no rail system. Most of downtown I think has bus service though.
