So I'm starting to finally get into some graded stuff, mostly because I like the protection aspect, and if I get hit by a bus tomorrow it will be easier for my wife to resell.
That being said, I've been picking up PC guys in mostly PSA 8/9s, and keeping an eye out on PSA 10s. Now obviously I know that grading is very subjective (part of why I've always laughed at it and avoided), but I've been coming across some cards that there just doesn't seem like there should be any way they should be a "10" in my very untrained eye opinion. I have never sent in a card to grade, know nothing about "pre-screening them", point system, etc. But to me, a 10 should be a pretty perfect card. And definitely not have major visual flaws like this side: ![]() Or this bum corner: ![]() Given the huge price difference between most 9s & 10s, that just seems pretty wild. Do 10's allow for one major flaw, or something I am not aware of? I know people preach to buy the card and not the slab (I preach a similar saying for autographs & COAs), but those just seem like pretty glaring issues. I'd literally take my PSA 8 Jeter over that PSA 10...lol So what am I missing? (Btw if there is a good article somewhere on pre-screening your cards for grading, or how to decide if it's even worth sending in, I'd love to check it out!) Thanks! |

sometimes PSA will allow for a PSA 10 to have one minor flaw depending on the rest of the card. And sometimes PSA will overlook factory rough cuts on some sets that were known to have them. Theres plenty of PSA 10's with issues, a lot that were gifts, and probably should've been 9's. Read their PSA 10 description.

I can't say anything for the corner, but PSA accounts for technology used at the time so it doesn't have to be a perfect cut.

Go buy all the Mattinglys you want with mint corners and good centering for $2-3 ea. Save your money on grading and buy more cards.
