I still dont get why Lebron silver prizms have shot up in value. I myself prefer topps/bowman chrome refractors/xfractors over Panini. To each his own I guess.

from my limited perspective, i agree with folks that since 2012, prizm has been the topps chrome comparable. but, during that time, prizm has crafted a 'rainbow' of parallels, which i think has the effect of diluting their own value as more and more variations of the parallels are released each year. the recurring common stock of value, however, seems to be the silver. as the amount of variations expand, people are betting on the long term value of the silver.

on a quasi-related topic, i do wonder too whether we are experiencing another shift in the premium chrome product from prizm to optic this year, and whether this is having anything to do with the spike in the prizm sales. i don't want to start a debate on whether prizm or optic is better, but is this year's lbj optic holo outselling the prizm silver because of the lakers uniform? print run? or something else...and, (this is a little conspiracy theory-ee) to what extent does panini intentionally try to create ambiguity around the premium chrome product by designing this years optic to look almost identical to much beloved past topps chrome product, while running the presses with prizm? i'd think panini would prefer a market with diverging camps gobbling up both so they can sell more product.
This is a great post. Your last sentence especially is spot on.

I need to look at previous years of optic more. For me, 2012 prizm was the only year I really liked. It’s become the most iconic panini set made to date in my opinion.

But this year? Give me optic. I wish there weren’t so many variations and parallels though.

I could care less about this years Optics having potential. It's just the nicer looking card compared to this years Prizm.

Had no idea they were this high. A raw 16/17 silver just went for almost $160 and a BGS 9.5 for $190. I cant remember if I still have this, but I'm sure I sold it for around $30 less than two years ago. Sheesh! Must have seen LeBron throw that inbounds pass off the backboard the other night before they decided to buy these!

Edit: found mine, quad 9.5s. that's neat. Agree with previous comments about this year's optic. Look like chrome, nice cards

The 18-19 Silver Prizm #6 now selling for $15-$20. Guess my run of picking these up for $4-$5 each are over now, glad I stocked up!

Well, the silver rush is on... spent some hours poring over old boxes and folders and came up with another little haul, this time from 1st/2nd year Select, which if I recall at the time was touted as Panini’s premium chrome-esque brand. Times have changed and so have tastes it seems. I didn’t really care for the silver prizms back then and am baffled by the current state of things now.

The Lebron Sky High is #’d 6/99 and came from the same box as a Giannis Draft Selections Gold RC /10. Select was around $70-80 back then on account of the perceived weak draft and I vividly recall pulling both as the best hits of the break and thinking “meh, it’s okay I guess... but he’s no MCW” ha!

With the way things have been trending I’ll just have to hope that optic and select silvers gain some more traction for the rest of us bargain hunters. IMO some of the $5 silvers of the lesser brands could be $15-$20 cards in not too long. Maybe it’s wishful thinking although FOMO does weird things to collecters

The real question is why the spike right now? It's a MASSIVE spike.

Regardless, I'm glad I picked them up for my PC while I did.

Nice group.

The reason for the spike is pretty simple to me. Mix a little bit of manipulation with some long overdue realization that the older Prizm silvers are severely short printed compared to what has been produced the last 2-3 years. But I do think the run up is a little much when looking at comparable cards.

I only have these 2 now and one more on the way. Pulled the orange at release and tried to sell back then. Couldn’t get $30 for it so I decided to keep it and send to BGS.

Just wait...
The LeBron GAME USED jersey card craze (no "player worn") is coming.
Some nice patch cards are still reasonable, that wont last forever
