Ichiro has deferrals until at least 2032. A lot of these types of contracts out there, seems people only know about Bonilla.

Such much hate reading all these comments. This guy is fun to watch and is good for baseball. Good deal for both sides.

Good for him.

I feel like this will be the contract people point to as an example of why huge free agent contracts are risky for many years. He'll bring in enough fans in the first few years that it will be hard to go wrong but this looks like it could easily go wrong later, especially if the NL doesn't add the DH.

They could have just Bonilla'd it and offered him 2 mil a year for the next 200 years.

I think the Phillies got a great deal. He is going to hit a lot of homeruns.

Does the Harper signing mean Philadelphia can't/won't add Trout in 2021?

They were never getting Trout. That is a pipe dream.

Based on info I looked at there’s 40 mlb players making 20+ million a year before you factor in offseason signings for 2019. So if them paying Harper 25 mill takes them out of the trout race then most teams are out.

They are paying Harper 25.8 mill for the next 13 years. If Harper had signed a 10 year $258 million contract with any team then everybody would say what a great deal it was and calling that ownership geniuses. So it really comes down to that extra three years. Phillies are gambling that 25 mill a year won’t be a big deal in 11-13 years. And they’re probably right.

Phillies will absolutely make a play for Trout if he becomes a FA. And can afford both

Comcast will make sure of it

Why is he a moron? When the world ends, he'll STILL be making $25 million the following year.

He's a moron if the Dodgers contract rumor is true...4 years $45 million/yr. He'd be a FA again at 30 and could sign a long contract then

4 years is a tricky number. If he gets a major injury, under performs, or both, his value as a thirty year old is significantly diminished and he may not be able to make up the difference as he'd need to get another 160 million. I think he's made the safest and most sensible play.

It's a funny world we live in. Man gets paid 330 million guaranteed and is considered an idiot. I don't think so.

It's not like he lit the world on fire last year. Have so confidence and bet on yourself. BTW, his salary this year is like $10 million.

But he's going to get $330 million no matter what. Or am I wrong about that?

Bruce Sutter actually has the best one even though it's not for the most money. It ends in 2021 I think but he deferred his entire 9.1 million salary from the contract he signed in 1985 with the Braves. They settled on 750k a season interest payments then 1.12 million a year for 30 years (until 2021) at which point the $9.1 million is due in full. He's going to make about $46 million on a $9 million dollar contract. I'd take that, especially since he retired 4 years into the deal and they still had to pay out the whole amount.

You are wrong, he will get less than half that after taxes and agent fees.
