Well, non-horror Lars Von Trier movies tend to be pretty disturbing. Add in serial killing and I'm pretty sure this one is a doozy. I'll definitely check it out.

The Final Girls is a lot of fun! I really enjoyed it and it did have some pretty funny parts. Do not watch Final Girl though, I was excited for that movie and boy did it suck!

Nothing will come close to “American Psycho”. Especially anything that comes from Von Trier.

watched it last night. a little disturbing, especially the picnic incident. the last 20 minutes were dumb, the ending could've been better. it's worth a watch, a bit slow at times. American Psycho is better

I watched it a few weeks ago and HATED it. It started off solid enough but then it just got weird and not in an interesting way. It was hard to finish sitting through for me

"The House The Jack Built" benefits a bit from knowing something about the filmmaker, Lars Von Trier. His movies over the years have become more and more controversial, to the point where many believe he is only trying to provoke controversy, and little else.

All in white below, because the ending of the film is given, and I wouldn't want to spoil it for those who can make it all the way through.
SPOILER

The grotesque murders in "The House The Jack Built" are actually metaphorical in this way, intended as stand-ins for his previous movies. In a sense, the director is Jack and as he tells his murderous tales (all allusions to previous Von Trier films), he is led down to the lowest circle of Hell as described in Dante's Inferno. While he is being shown the very bottom, he is told he will actually reside two levels up, because at least his stories were entertaining. Even so, Jack thinks he can crawl around the ledge to get to the other side, and tries to despite being told no one else ever has. Sure enough, he loses his grip and plunges into the fiery pit.

In that way, the character's narcissism is his ultimate downfall, and Von Trier may indeed believe his own will be. His deadly sin was thinking that with the great skill as a filmmaker he inarguably possesses, he could use any kind of storytelling, no matter how repugnant, to get to the larger truth that all serious films aspire to. The problem is, maybe you just can't. There are some things so disturbing to so many, that the message is lost among the gratuitous details used to reach it.

I think he tried this before, with his nearly-as-controversial pair of films "Nyphomaniac" Volumes 1 and 2, with the sex metaphor used in those replaced by the serial killing one in "The House The Jack Built". Love or hate his movies, every time out, he does something no one else is doing (and maybe for good reason, but that's another argument).

So is it a good movie?

Good ol' Carlo, one of only two people I truly like on this forum.

It is easily the best and worst movie I've seen in the last few months, and I saw "Mandy"!

I wonder what Elvis would've thought watching from a big comfy chair at Graceland seeing what Jack does to the character played by his real life grand-daughter. I kinda think the King, were he here, might've put the kibosh on that, with karate, if necessary.

I did start watching this last night, but fell asleep about 10 minutes in.

Watched that Fyre Festival documentary first and then switched over to the Bundy one. Definitely had me intrigued and will finish this weekend.

Funny you mention this because I was just going to start a new thread on the trailer w/ Efron for the Bundy movie.

Looks good. (And I can't stand the kid, but his looks and this roll will gel nicely)

Hadn’t seen this yet!

I’m on the fence with Efron. His career has been better than I thought it would be so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt with this. He does look the part!

I remember the original telling of this sordid tale in the TV miniseries "Deliberate Stranger" in which another really handsome fellow, Mark Harmon played Bundy. As it was on television (in the 1986, several years before Ted was finally executed), it couldn't really show the depths of this man's brutality.

"How It Really Happened" on HLN has a four episode run looking at the case with a lot of vintage material and interviews and that was worth a look, too. Disturbing to say the least. Even Bundy, towards the end, shook his head and claimed to be appalled by the utter senselessness of what he'd done.

I might look at the NetFlix show, but I'm pretty well familiar with the facts of it already. I'll definitely see the new dramatization with Efron.

Don’t listen to the pretentiousness. It wasn’t a beautiful and absolutely soul crushing film like “Melancholia”, but it gave me a hell of a nightmare after I was done. Von Trier is hit and miss, but this was undoubtedly a hit.

One of these things is not like the other 7.

Did you notice the montage of shots from the previous Von Trier movies in "The House That Jack Built"? Why do you suppose they were there?

Anyway, I gave it a "thumbs up", too. Learn to read a review.

Am I the only one who thinks this trailer is garbage? I'm not sure what they're doing with the background music and graphics, but it seems as if they're trying to sensationalize Bundy.

I'll watch it, but this looks like a big swing and miss which is unfortunate because I don't mind Efron and this could've been big for his career, but to come out with that trailer was a mistake.

It's the opposite for me. The story of Bundy has been told and told again by many different directors and I'm hoping it sensationalized. I think Hollywood struggles to create new movies that are different (Marvel #331 being released this week for example) ... I want this to be different.
