Default Are we in a prospect bubble?

I understand people chasing the “next big thing”, but some of these prospect cards are selling for more than almost everyone except maybe Trout. Even if these guys turn out to be MVP-World Series winners I.e. Betts and Bryant how much higher can their cards go? It seems like once they go pro people move on to the next shiny object. Thoughts?

It still baffles me a guy who has never had a major league at bat sells for a grand, and a sure fire HOFer(Albert Pujols) sell for less than that.

Apologies if this has been brought up. Too lazy at work to search.

I guess I should rephrase the question. Do people actually expect to profit off of Vlad Jr at these prices when cards of MVP winners go for significantly less?

SPX sold for $250, SP Authentic sold for $500 graded a PSA 10, Finest PSA 9 sold for $225, Bowman sold for $600 as a BGS 9.5

I wasn't really talking about his Chrome auto, but you could get those 4 cards for the price one BC Refractor Vlad Jr is selling for. I mean, if we were talking Soto or Acuna, okay they are amazing prospects who excelled in the majors. But he has zero at bats in the majors.

I thought we all agreed we wouldn't let the marks in on the scam and just keep pushing the _______insert prospect name here_____ hype train?

Judge, Bellinger, Acuna, and Soto have set a high bar soooooo high.

The contrarian in me has a hard time believing a Toronto Blue Jay reaching those Rookie levels and sustaining value.

I missed the Vlad boat, and the few cards in my inventory are going to be sold around Spring training.

That said, a poker buddy of mine has a son in the Blue Jay system.

He said the whole organization is in awe of VJr.

Maybe he sparks a Canadian collector boom?

Prices for average prospects have doubled or tripled since I started collecting prospects in the early 2000's. I think what we are seeing is caused by the waves that huge talents like Acuna and Vlad are creating. When people witness the pay day for people who got in early on Acuna/Vlad types they get FOMO and buy up the #3-#20 organizational top prospect types. I can't find a decently priced "sleeper" pick to save my life anymore.

This is more the point I was trying to make. There will always be a market for the big guys. Well said.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Such is the nature of prospecting.

Yeah, agree that the big guys will always command top dollar. But It’s the prices that mid-talent prospects are garnering that amazes me.

This 100%. There's an OF prospect who hit .279 last year with 9 HRs and 7 SBs in 473 ABs. His blues gems sell for over $500.

The hype is real. Just need to be selective on whom you go after. I missed getting in on Vlad price wise ,but acquired quite a bit of early Acuna's before the current boom.

Its a new way to collect. So many people missed out on Trout, and now everyone wants to try to get in on the next big superstar. Unfortunately this is also leading to over inflated production levels. What will most of it be worth in a decade or so? Depends on the player and how accessible the card is.
