Box price to good hit price ratio got out of whack. A lot of products you can barely cover the cost of a box with a really good hit. At those odds I’d rather actually go the casino

Exactly! Even slots only tag you for 10-20% average. And you have better chance at a "big" hit.
Boxes these days it seems you got to get lucky to see 50% return.

My reason was eBay, used to bust packs and boxes in the 90's all the way into the 2000's. Even back then my main interest was David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

So I would buy boxes of stuff and have tons of base cards I didn't care about. Realized it was a waste of money when online sites came out offering base DR and TD cards for a dime each. Those inserts I can never pull were online too, probably the same price as a box of cards.

So I switched to buying singles. No more wasting money at least on cards and no more storage issues of worthless base.

I'll give panini some love with the coach cards actually. It was something different. Not saying it was a good idea, but this hobby needs different things, it's the same stuff year after year. I paid the crazy price for a box of Upper Deck supreme and only made about half of what I paid for it, but the "cards" are nice and while they aren't card size it's something different.

I quit in 2016, not because of the money but because I got tired of being the problem. Panini will do something universally loathed by collectors and we’ll all sit around and tell each other that nothing will change until we stop buying their product. Which is true, but nobody actually stops. People usually don’t want to start the trend, they want to be in the trend. That, and realizing that 90% of breakers are true addicts, myself included. In 2016 I decided to cold turkey quit all my addictions to be present for my kids (nicotine, online video games, cards)

I haven't stopped but I certainly have slowed down a lot over the years. Many reasons, one main one being cost too much money. Others include too much product, not enough good product, and good product harder to find which raises prices even more. I also have found within basketball if there is a mem or auto "hit" from panini, I get some crappy jersey card almost every time and I don't care for mem cards overall. I focus more on my team/auto and memorabilia collection now than just cards. I don't PC any certain player so am not much into buying singles as much as if I PC'ed.

Much respect. Most people don't realize/won't admit this is an addiction problem. I guarantee you Panini does though.

Bought FOTL stuff to flip.

The retail prizm sucked me back in.

Hello, I'm Max. I'm a retail junkie.

That's cool, I just hope it doesn't become a habit.

I haven't opened any current product since probably 2011-2012. Personally, I just don't like the state of the current hobby and the heavy emphasis on group breaks, redemptions, player-worn memorabilia, ultra-high end products, 1 pack-per-box products, etc.

As much as I would like to be a more active member in today's hobby, I'm not going to put my money towards something I don't agree with. I'm not necessarily expecting a change or trying to start a movement to boycott Panini/Topps, I just simply get more enjoyment spending my money towards singles and wax from the 80's and 90's.

I just get frustrated by people that constantly complain about how terrible Topps/Panini are, yet continue to shovel money towards them.

The only cards I have bought have come from sales to thin my collection out and it's been sucessful! Now the cards I own are awesome instead of a ton of stuff collecting dust. I also put in a new living room floor as well...

There's no good products anymore... Sets lost their integrity a long time ago. 2012 was the end. 2011 was the last good year. That goes for Topps Panini and Upper Deck

Enjoying doing something does not make you an addict. Even if that thing is gambling. There are many people who love to play poker, so they go to a casino every few months with $50 and play until they lose their money or want to leave. They're not addicted to gambling, despite enjoying gambling.

The first step is admitting there is a problem :P

Plain and simple - panini (aka poopnini).

I was a 10 case exquisite guy per year until this new company took over. My basketball wax buying gradually diminished to almost nothing.

My interest for any new basketball release has gone to nil.

I tried flawless/eminence/prizm, etc.. and the joy of the experience has vanished.

I have even become less interested in the sport of basketball to a certain degree because of panini.

Call me a fake basketball fan, but when you feel nauseated every time I open a panini product, inhaling white cardboard flecks of redemption garbage, something is wrong.

So thank you, panini, for saving me $20,000 a year at least, on not buying basketball wax.

Agreed. It comes down to how much control you have over it. The worst is when it starts negatively affecting your life and/or others around you, but you won't address it (denial).
