Very cool thread. I haven’t been collecting basketball for the past few years, making this extremely helpful for deciding what cards to grab from previous seasons.

Not quite sold on Kobe's All-Rookie Team being in the top 20. I know it's the hardest to pull of the inserts in Essentials but I think License to Dominate will be the one people will remember and collect years down the line.

Lastly, is Spotlight Signatures not considered an insert?
I’ll need to edit the OP to state that I’m only including “non-hit” (memorabilia/auto) insert sets. There are some amazing “hit” type insert sets, but for the sake of this list I just wanted to do plain ol’ cards.

I only included the US Based releases for this list, although when I have time I’ll probably add international releases as there are a few. Super rare product in the states though.

I wanted an insert from Essentials on the list because I feel like it’s one of the best insert products Panini has done. I went with Kobe’s All-Rookie team solely because:

-I’m a Lakers fan
-I’m a Kobe fan
-It’s strictly a rookie set
-Most importantly, it’s the continuation of a set that’s been done before in Hoops

In some instances I value one-off sets. “From Downtown!” Is a great example of a set that I love but not sure I would want a new set every year. To me, truly great inserts are almost a 1 time card. Let Panini create a new insert rather than going back to the well.

The Kobe’s All-Rookie team is kind of a different beast, and harkens back to the 90’s with Grant Hill’s All-Rookie team cards. That is one set that I love each year and don’t mind seeing.

I must have thought that this was a "memorabilia insert" when researching and didn't include it. Nice catch.

Since I was unaware of this set I've now done some digging.

Apparently we have 1st Quarter, 2nd Quarter, 3rd Quarter, 4th Quarter, and Overtime. Everything past the 1st quarter is a parallel that is numbered to the time remaining in the game so 36, 24, 12, and 5 respectively.

Pretty neat idea! Any clue how to distinguish what parallel is what without looking at the back?

The color of the clear plastic rectangle is different on each parallel. Blue is the base version.

It seems some are blue, but some like this Lin are Black.

The confusing part is all the Overtime /5 "Clear Visions" I've seen now are black as well.

I'll now be looking for these Clear Vision Black ones to be mislabeled.

Base is Blue

2nd Quarter is Red /36

3rd Quarter is Purple /24

4th Quarter is Green /12

Overtime is Black /5 (And has holofoil where the player and team name is)

That ClearVision set is nice. I like the numbered parallels too, even though this thread is about inserts. Put another vote down for 2012 Crusade for me too. I thought those were the best looking ones they made in their run of that insert. It also has the great double RC class in it.

That works for me, but I've found numerous examples (like the Lin I provided) where the Base is Black and unnumbered.

I'd never seen this set before so is there any explanations as to why that is?

I'd like to think it is because people are lazy and they don't care to accentuate the part of the card that stands out the most. All I do is put a small piece of white paper behind the colored "window" and it pops. Here you go:

I think I'd have the Court Kings Also Known As on the list compared to one or two others. Those were fantastic and the value wasn't bad on them either.

What about the Kobe Black Mamba card from 2011-12 Hoops? Not a set but it is an insert.

Completely glossed over that card as well as the Blake Griffin Blake Superior insert.

Never heard of that Kobe and now I must have it! Thanks for the heads up!

Durant had Durantula in 2012-13 Hoops but they stopped after that year.

The Panini Gold Standard short prints from the first two original releases were wildly popular. I own the Dennis Rodman in a Mavs uniform....it was one of xx/10 made....the last 10 of the /299 base set. (Not another mindless insert with different foil and a serial number.....it featured the depicted player on the team, serial numbered to the amount of games he played with that team).

I remember the Ewing was expensive also. Any love for these?

Looks like last years From Downtown in Excalibur is now Downtown in Cornerstone. 20 players total including 6 rookies (Lonzo, Tatum, Mitchell, Josh Jackson, Fultz, Dennis Smith Jr.) and no Ben Simmons.

From Downtown was in Studio last year.

It is so funny to see Ben Simmons in last year set knowing he made zero 3 pointer from 11 attempt in 81 games.

I’m going to update the list soon with the 17/18 products.

I saw the John Wall Downtown insert in the preview. I’m 50/50 on the art of the card, but the holofoil sporadically on the card is a nice touch. I do hope that they’re tough pulls too. 6 cards per box and 72 per case. With 1 insert per box I’m afraid that they’ll be watered down.

I saw the Startups had the same thing, although it’s honestly tough to tell if it’s holofoil or just has a refractory touch.

I generally always side with the first iteration of an insert set though, but the inserts in Cornerstones seem pretty cool.

Was getting ready to say the Vintage Art cards from Noir HAVE to be on the list for 2017-18...then saw your 2016-17 disclaimer that they’re technically base. Crushed.

This year's Vintage Art from Noir has to crack the list. It's such a beautiful set and a major step up from last year's design.
