Default Who is today’s star’s 80s/90s equivalents

I don’t know if this has been done before but I thought it would be fun. I wanted to see what everyone thought today’s players are like in the golden era of the 80s and 90s. You can do it anyway you want but I was thinking more in terms of their legacy instead of their play style slash talent.
LeBron/MJ
Curry/magic Johnson
Draymond Green/ Dennis Rodman
Dwayne Wade/ Scottie Pippen
Durant/Isiah Thomas just because I think they are leaders of unpopular teams that win

IMO, Lebron is a lot closer to MJ than Barkley from a legacy standpoint. Similarly, Curry is on another level from Reggie Miller as a two time MVP and two time Champ (with more career and possibly more championships to come). I definitely see the comps in the other three though.

Yeah, I get that. I think this is an interesting topic for sure when taking playing style out and more comparing legacies. But it seems anytime anyone brings up MJ and Lebron in the same thread it ends a certain way, lol. Hopefully, people can skip those two and focus on the other players in the league which I find to be a much more interesting topic.

Thinking about it I would go with Barkley and Westbrook. Both one time MVP's who never got a title. Volatile personalities with generational athletic gifts.

I would also say Lebron is very similar to Karl Malone (except way better) in that both are physical marvels who had remarkable health and consistency throughout their careers and extended primes. It is just Lebron's ceiling is closer to MJ than Malone's was.

What player do you think is a good comp for Larry Bird?

Not sure there is a good one.

Closest I might be able to think of is Kevin Love, though Bird is obviously much better.

Both 6'9''ish white guys who are NBA Champions, can score, shoot 3's, rebound and play decent enough defense to help their team win.

They also both have a gold medal and played in the greatest rivalries of their respective era's.

Again, obviously Bird was much better but style wise they match as much as anyone I can think of right now.

Easy buddy, we are on the first page. I don't know if there is an easy comp for him. Possibly Kevin Durant depending on how the rest of his career unfolds is his closest comp in the modern NBA from a legacy standpoint. But KD will likely never reach the ceiling that Bird hit from 84-87.

Bird is better than everyone on that list except for Jordan and LeBron. Magic is about a tie. But i guess no one's ever played like Bird so there's no one to compare him to.

Im not mad, it's excitement in a sarcastic way. Text doesn't translate context very well typing words on the internet.

Think about it. They both played for the most popular/hated team of their time, played really fun basketball, and changed the way the game was played.

By age 31 McHale had made 1 career 3 point attempt.

Never cracked 10 rebounds per game for a full season either.

Lol, I hear you. I wasn't trying to start anything, I was just having fun too, but again reading what I wrote doesn't give the context of how I was saying it in my head as I was typing it

I actually agree with you. At this point, I think Curry's basketball legacy is closer to Isiah as a two time champ and leader of a franchise. However, Curry has a lot of time to go and if he reels off more championships, his basketball resume will start to approach Magic. I don't think he ever gets there but we are talking about a top 5 all-time player, so there is no shame in that.

However, I absolutely agree that Curry stylistically and culturally is a great comp for Magic. Curry and Magic are both hugely famous leaders of the most popular (positively and negatively) teams of their era's. Their personality and style of play set the culture for their respective team's success. Both had taller players (KD and Kareem) who their teams looked to for buckets when they needed them, but each was (wait for it...) the straw that stirs the drink for their teams.
