This is almost too incredible not to share. My wife is always so good about letting me know if anyone on Craigslist or Next Door is selling anything sports card related and last evening she let me know that some guy a mile from our home was selling several monster boxes worth of cards for $25. Intrigued, I decided to take a look and saw that it appeared to be mostly junk wax era cards, but saw that there was nearly a full box worth of unopened wax from 1987-1988 Fleer, Donruss, Topps and Score, along with many complete sets of random Topps and Fleer sets like 1987 Toys R Us Rookies and Fleer League Leaders. Thinking it might be fun to bust the wax, I decided why not. The guy also threw in two more boxes he found which had a complete set of 1981 Fleer and a factory sealed set of 1989 Fleer. Not bad. Again, we're talking $25 and busting that wax was fun enough to make it count. I even pulled some key rookies I might submit for grading, just for the hell of it. There were also 4 rack packs from 1988 Topps with Mark McGwire's Topps All-Star Rookie showing on the top or bottom of the racks. Pretty neat and some McGwire fan might like them for their PC.
Again, nothing life changing here. But this was an awesome blast from the past. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to the cards, the guy says he has two signed baseballs he'd like to toss in for free. These baseballs were not in the pictures on Next Door so I was in the dark as to who signed the baseballs. The first ball was had an autograph that looked very familiar. Thanks to the forum, it was identified as Hall of Fame reliever, Rollie Fingers. ![]() Again, pretty cool. I'll probably sell that to someone who wants to get it. The ball is pretty clean, too. Here's where things get a bit crazy. There are probably tens of thousands of pro baseball players who could have signed that other ball. I'm probably the only human who is a Kevin Seitzer superfan. Literally, I've never met someone who is as big a fan of Seitzer as I am. The second ball was signed by, you guessed it, two-time MLB All-Star, Kevin Seitzer. What the hell are the odds of that??????

That's also what makes it kind of weird. He's not local at all. Went to school in Illinois, played for the Royals, Brewers, A's (local) and Indians. Fingers also played for the A's and Brewers, so there's kind of a tie to Seitzer in that sense. But, Seitzer only played for the A's for a brief moment in his career. It's really odd to begin with that the guy has a ball signed by my favorite player, but it's not like Seitzer is a bay area guy.

Hell of a $25 pickup!
I don't have a single-signed Seitzer ball. When I was a kid I didn't understand that concept, so my Seitzer ball has other Royals legends on it like Bill Pecota and Gary Thurman...

I actually bought a collection for $10 two years ago - the guy was going to list for free, but he felt that a lot of strange people would show up if he offered them for free.

Probably got the good ol’ “everything from the 80s was over printer and worthless” shpiel and figured $25 is better than having clutter

Pretty much. If someone doesn't want the stuff anymore and it has little value, the haul-away alone is beneficial.

I went to a gym in Kansas/Missouri border. Apparently it's owned by MacFarlane and I believe Seitzer. One of the first young stars I followed back in my day.

Cool finds...
I hit a yardsale on Saturday. A kid had a bunch of cards for sale. Over paid for $40, but still... Found 4 Jeter Future Stars and several boxes of 1996 Mantle inserts. The obligatory '87 Topps box was all well centered. Bonds was off a hair (which for him not too bad). Unmolested Sierrra, Larkin, Clark, Canseco, McGwire. Still searching the lot. The weekend before hit an country auction and purchased a bunch of Jordan stuff. Been on a good roll with some very good purchases. |
