To be a contender you need AT LEAST 2 guys who can go out and get you 30+ a game if needed in the playoffs. The Raptors, Cavs, Wizards, and Bucks have that. The Celtics would have had that if Hayward didn’t get hurt. The Celtics should also have 4 players like that in 2-3 years time.

Generally speaking, the teams that go far in the playoffs have that type of offensive fire power to come at you over a 7 game series. They have a 2nd guy to take the scoring burden on an off-night or worse yet and injury.

A great offensive game can overcome being horrendous on defense (IT4 is the prime example, Kyrie until this year was the perfect example as well). Being great on defense but having no offensive game just wont cut it in the NBA if you don’t have multiple guys who can go out and get buckets around you.
OK, let’s revisit the 2004 Pistons that had Rip Hamilton as their leading scorer at a hair over 20 PPG and won the “Chip” based solely on Defense. They also went back to the Finals with a new coach and just barely lost to a great Spurs team the following year with the best record in the NBA.

I said generally speaking, but it’s also a completely different NBA right now.

The year the Pistons won it all, the highest scoring team in the East put up 98 a game. Right now the lowest scoring team in the East puts up 100.

The Mavs scored 105 a game that season and were the highest scoring team in the league. They’d be 16th in the league this season, or the offensive equivalent of an 8 seed.

But I’ll concede, the 2017-18 Celtics could absolutely compete for a title if they were playing in the 2004 playoffs.

A shame the Warriors fans didn't have anything to cheer about today.

Where are those guys, anyway?

Thought they would have chimed in..... other than the one guy on the first page of this thread when the game was still in question.

Where'd he disappear to?

They'll be back in droves once the Cavs find themselves trailing by 20+ in an upcoming game.

Disappointing this game wasn't closer, I'm not really surprised at the result. It's kind of hard to plan for a team like the current Cavs squad when you don't know what to expect.

Boston's rookies weren't great either.

I really don't want to see Lebron in the finals again, especially if he's just gonna let KD walk all over him, give someone else a go.
