A buddy of mine and I were discussing this yesterday and he mentioned he believes Nike definitely persuaded KD to make the move to the Warriors as it would put a Nike athlete as the face of the best NBA team for the years to come in place of having an under armour athlete with that title. That would of course slow down the momentum of Curry's under armour sales and shift that market share back to Nike. If that was really Nike's plan it seems to be heading in the right direction. I found his take interesting. Not sure if this was ever discussed before or not.

It seams a little far fetched but possible. #Notgonnawinanyways

Wasn't there already a Nike player as the face of the best team in the NBA, but also the best current player in Nike's basketball portfolio? I could be wrong though.

You're right there's info missing from my post. By having KD on the Warriors regardless of who wins between the Cavs and Warriors over the next few years the face of the winning franchise will be guaranteed to be a Nike athlete rather than an under armour athlete. Having curry as the second best player on the team also helps reduce the impact of under armour

Well, think about this.... Who is KD's main employer (cash wise)?
It's not the Golden State Warriors But really I believe its just one of a variety of factors in why he went there. Also included -A ready made stacked team -Bigger market -He could be the clear number 1 while his point guard is number 2, unlike in OKC

Yep agree with everything here. I think Nike woulda been a key factor in why he chose Warriors over clippers for example. Move KD to bigger market team and reduce hype on under armour's golden child. 2 birds one stone

I'm not so sure KD is the clear #1 in GS. Let's keep in mind this is the regular season, and they want to get KD involved to fit in. Come playoffs, at the end of the game i'm sure both "could" take the big shot....along with Klay. But i think if they had one player to live/die with a shot on it's Curry.
I also doubt Nike plotted all of this out. Theoretically it could hurt KD's image by selling out and going to GS. I think he just saw the warriors as his best chance to win, and he didnt feel that him and westbrook were good enough. |

Throw in no competition between KD and Westbrook (Jordan)
.....Bill Simmons would have a field day with this...well when Simmons was good

Yep and if he went to clippers you have Blake who's also Jordan brand. Going to GS was perfect to boost Nike and hit Curry and under armour. It makes sense I think

I don't know about Nike but how about blaming Hurricane Katrina? Katrina hits and the Hornets move to OKC because they have no where else to go. The region realizes that NBA basketball is great and Bennett buys the Sonics and moves them and Durant to OKC to play. If Durant stays in Seattle, he's in a top 15 media market instead of being down in the 40s in OKC. His star is bigger and maybe going to GS doesn't seem as great. Or maybe it wouldn't matter at all lol.

Seattle's a great area and if the Sonics never moved, I think there woulda been a much stronger probability of him staying put. |
