Greetings,
I had a question in regards to trimmed cards. How does one even get the idea of trimming the card? I understand if there are bent corners or what not, but how does one even think about doing it to a card of such calibur such as a lebron rc? That seriously boggles my mind. Secondly, speaking of trimmed cards, I bought a box of excalibur of 2015-2016 last year and I was able to pull out a rpa of a rooke /25 straight from a pack, but noticed it was slightly smaller than a normal sized card. I noticed this because when I put it inside the magnetic case, it didn't fully fit in, and felt slightly smaller. Is the term "trimming" also a way for a company (panini) to have an error and cut the cards slightly smaller than it should have been? or is the term trimming only meant for people who cut it themselves? Has anyone had this type of experience where they opened a pack and realized a card being slightly smaller? Thank you in advance! |

As to the mindset, people trim usually for better centering to get a higher grade to make more $ because they are scum with no souls and only care about $. That's the short of it. There are a few known trimmers who routinely get cards past the graders that are trimmed.
To the next part, yes a card out of a pack can be of a different size. There are many times a card right out of a pack gets rejected as being trimmed by a grading company while a card known to have wide borders gets trimmed down to 2.5 inches wide and gets in. I don't think any of them know for certain. There are also many times and instances of card X is graded, person cracks out and re subs or crosses and it's trimmed. Then they sub again and it gets graded. It's not an exact science. To not throw up and or leave the hobby I've adopted the philosophy of "If it fools me I'm good, ignorance is bliss". |

This card here is my holy grail. First KG NBA numbered auto and it's 21/50.
But it's been trimmed! Check the right side of the card. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-99-skyb...19.m1438.l2649

I've always been curious how people trim.......Do they laser it, scalpel, razor blade?
Certainly to get the edges so clean they must be using something very sharp. I think doctoring up cards and counterfeits are bad for the hobby, but I do wonder how it's all done. I've seen some amazing PMG's and Legacies that were made up from Asia......anyone know the story behind them and what kind of equipment was used? Obviously they didn't go to Kinkos |
