Overpaid on many of my Nicholson cards. I didn't really start collecting him until after the small amount of hype (yes Andrew Nicholson had some hype) on him. I can understand people trying to get as much of their money back as possible now. Some I couldn't pass up like the one in my avatar, others I'm happy to wait it out.

Also overpaid on many of my previous pc cards. But I do get good deals from time to time so it really all balances out in the end.

So can we agree that contacting a seller about a sold item is not black and white but very gray? I'm sure one of the know it all's on the forum will copy and paste an Ebay rule forbidding it...shot me already!
It was the first and only time I did it. My boss, who has been on Ebay since day 1 buying and selling had no problem with it. His attitude was maybe he just made another contact that he could deal with in the future. Again, all the seller had to say was NO.
Am I or am I not a POS? I bet if we met at a show and I told any of you this story you would be incredulous and laugh. My two LCS' had no issue with what I did by reaching out to a seller either.
My intent was to share my story and my passion with fellow members, sorry I did.

That's the other thing about PC buying. Overpaying for cards routinely is exactly the sentiment I have and why I try my best not to lowball because whoever the seller is, albeit a collector who opened a box or a dealer who selling inventory, I understand the ability to recover expenses and I want them happy enough in this hobby to continue to buy future products and post their singles for sale. Especially if you enjoy card collecting as solely a singles buyer, then keeping the cycle of opening unopened product to sell those singles means a necessity for equilibrium of money in and money out. Like overpaying for singles coming out of high end product just for one example. You know the expense, especially if they ventured into more than one box, so overpaying to buy a single of your PC player is not outlandish to me, unless I'm flat broke or the card's eye appeal doesn't mesh with the asking price.

Well said Chris_ac, may thoughts on collecting a PC or two. I have wasted so much money busting boxes (I like to put together sets with my son) that I am now only going to buy one or two products and them just buy singles. Do the math: I'll still be way ahead if I pay alittle more for singles and the seller will have more money to buy cases and cases of product.
Crazy that Anyone can buy a top 10 players Immaculate card for $ 5-10 plus shipping when there are what 10 to a box at $600 a box (average price of $60a card!!!) ? I hope the seller gets a few huge hits to justify opening crazy expensive product!
In the late 80's my brother stopped collecting every product (Big 3 plus Score, UD, etc) and focused on Rickey Henderson. He was sick of the avalanche of baseball products that were being released. Guess he was ahead of his time!

+1
I don't base how generous my offer is based on the cost of boxes, but I do base it on the quality of the product. Market will eventually adjust and prices will go down on high end stuff that doesn't sell... I don't feel like I should incentivize breakers to overpay for wax. I do pay more for flawless 1/1 than intrigue, totally certified, studio, etc, but I'd pay more for a court kings 1/1 than a gala 1/1 and court kings is much much cheaper cost per card.

I think that trying to undercut the original buyer was a slimy move. Doesn't make you a slimy guy... but I think there is way too much attention being paid to this one line in your story.

Thanks for sharing your story. My impulse control tends to wax and wane. There are times I just need a card and do anything to try to acquire it. My weakest moment was going after a 90s printing plate. Seller had it listed at 2500$. It was a 97-98 stadium club Chicago bull team of the 90s yellow plate. It had my PC guy on the front... but also with Michael Jordan, Scottie pippen, Dennis rodman. I really wanted it and put in what I thought was a very low ball offer. I offered like 350$ on it and the seller immediately countered at 1200$. I had already gotten a 50% discount! I couldn't spend that much so I countered at 500$. Seller came back at 900$ and said it was the lowest he could go. I countered at 800$, as that was the balance of my bank account and he accepted.

So I got a 90s Jordan 1/1 (kinda) for 800$. Nearly 3x what I had paid for any card before. I just got so caught up in the game and the immediate counter offers. I don't know how I did from a value standpoint... it was /is for PC so that wasn't really the issue. but I definitely overpaid in the sense that I didn't have that much money to spend on a Non-necessity hobby item but spent it anyways...

Didn't want to undercut the buyer, I just wanted the card and wanted him ( the buyer) to know he could make a very nice profit in a very short amount of time. Turns out he made a killing!
Wish I had a card that someone really wanted!

I bought this one last week and it just arrived today:

I won't say how much I paid for it, but it was the most I ever paid for a JJ card. Of the six guys, three are already out of the league and two will join them very soon. Player selection is a bit brutal, but still.

Incredible. I'm sure the other 5 have people who collect them, not even counting the Nets team collectors. Great pickup.

Once paid $100 for a Reggie Miller with a BV of $15. It was the last one I needed for a set and had never seen one before. Two months later another one sold for $6.

Probably overpaid by ~$50 or a Winslow NT RPA but it was a redemption so that was part of it
