Default Fun with the CBA.... The Deron Williams situation

This isn't being reported yet, but it's going to be interesting to watch and those of you here who like the CBA may find this interesting.

Deron Williams was "waived" less than an hour ago by the Mavs.

Lots of people are now tweeting about the Cavs getting him. But they may not get a chance.

If I'm understanding the CBA correctly, teams that are under the cap by the pro-rata amount that he is owed have a chance to claim his rights in the next 48 hours. These teams include the Nuggets and the Jazz.

If either of those teams, or one of the other two or three teams, claims him.... he is obligated to go to those teams.

So, for you Cavs fans, you'll know in 48 hours if he might be your new backup point guard and possible part time two guard. Until then, you have to hope that Utah and Denver stay away....

Hmm. And Utah has already showed interest in trading for him.... We'll see.

That would suck for the Cavs. Deron is exactly the type of dynamic playmaker off the bench that they've been looking for.

That said, I think the Jazz would really improve by adding him behind George Hill.

I just read that the CBA also has an interesting impact on Bogut
Because GSW weren't the last team to trade him, they would be eligible to pick him up if he gets waived

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

Some of us older folks do remember when there was a window......Deron was THE best PG in the league. CP3 and Deron battled this title out. I can't believe how his career went after leaving Utah. And yet CP3 is still....arguably......the man.

Yeah, there was a point when I was arguing to anyone that would listen that Deron was the best PG in the NBA. He was so damn good in Utah.

Was never as good as Paul. Billups and Nash were probably better as well in the first several years of his career, but he was really good, definitely top 3-4 during his short prime.

He's still a solid reserve. Has had an underrated career.

He was all second team at his best. For a few years it was a debate.

The argument for Deron being better than Paul was that while Paul certainly had better accounting stats, Deron OWNED Chris Paul head to head. Like completely owned him.

And since Paul had some really good teammates for a number of years, Tyson, West, peja - teams that felt like they should at least be comparable to derons jazz teams, the jazz were more successful, going to the WCF once and the second round twice in derons time here.

I had Deron Williams teammates as way better FWIW. Okurr, Boozer and Kirelenko were all almost as good as D Will. Milsap was also right there. Even had Korver there for a run. Ronnie Brewer, Wes Matthews both above average wings. Those teams were really deep and really good.

Those Hornets rosters were super mediocre and carried by Paul IMO. Terrible depth, no second star. West was good not great. Not much else.

But I agree that Deron was really good. Always liked him. He's had a fantastic career. Just don't think he was ever the best Point guard, and his prime was pretty short, and even during his prime he'd miss 10+ games a year.

Man Deron was awesome with Utah, that team was tough. Just like Stockton and Malone though, I found a lot of Deron and Boozers success was directly related to Jerry Sloans pick and roll offense that got both those guys 20 and 10 back in those days. Man Sloan is underrated.

It's interesting that Deron never really got close to that kind of play, I know there were injuries but you don't forget how to shoot and Chris Paul has managed to still get his even without having the speed.

And to think Deron complained about Sloan and his "same old plays"

Yeah, Deron definitely made a ton of money but he's gotta think sometimes how great he had it in Utah.

This is big for the Cavs......

Having a second unit run by this guy will give us an edge that none of the other top teams have.

When everyone is healthy the Cavs bench is going to be loaded. D-Will, Frye, Jefferson, Korver, Shmupert, Williams and Liggins. Insanity.

This gives the cavs the deepest team hands down. Barring anymore injuries we're going back to back

That is very funny statement. They are the deepest team now that they have a broken down point guard that cant play a lick of defense? Very interesting perspective.

Let's not get too confident...

Last time I heard someone saying that it was the guy sitting behind me at Oracle at half time of Game 7.

I believe he later disappeared into the ether when Kyrie hit his shot.

But what it does is makes it so we no longer have to cringe everytime Lebron is off the court for fear of giving up a 10-0 run. That's what Golden State does best; you rest your stars, they keep in some combo of Durant, Curry, Klay and you can't keep up.

Now we can go ahead at match the with Deron running the point, and some kind of combo of Kyrie, Love, Korver, etc

Defensive ability or lack there of has nothing to do with bench depth lol.

Cavs are pretty deep.

About 10-11 guys who can play meaningful late round playoff minutes when we're healthy... plus there's still a chance that we get Bogut.

Sure these guys are old, but if they only need to play 15 mins a night they can be effective.

Can Deron outplay Curry? No. (Kyrie Can though)

Can Deron outplay Shaun Livingston? I'd say so.

That's the value of this add.

He's better than Kay Felder . Personally I already thought Cavs had the deepest team (when healthy). I think D-Will is going to thrive on this team. He doesn't really have to do much.

It's a solid add for the Cavs for the regular season, but I doubt Deron will play that many minutes in playoff games that matter.
