Question Buying a suit: recommendations?

So I have my doctoral thesis defense coming up soon and would like to purchase a suit or some nice slacks and a sport coat.

Does anyone have suggestions or any testimonials of some of their favorite stores?

I have been researching places like Jos. A. Bank, Men's warehouse and even department store sections (JC Penney, etc.).

I don't have a big budget but if I can get like a couple of suits, pants, blazers/sport coats, polos for $300-400, that would be great.

Thank you.

If your budget isn't huge hit up the men's warehouse physical store for a suit fitting. From there, look for the best deal on the interwebs and buy with enough time to return and/or Tailor as you see fit.

I have a very nice Tommy Hilfiger Suit Jacket that I could let go at a nice price!

Let me know!

Size is 46L x 40

Here is a link to it on eBay, let me know here if you decide to make an offer, I'd prefer to deal here if possible! Thanks Friend!

On a small budget I'd definitely hit a department store. I have two suits that I've gotten at Kohls and they're nice enough that I've received compliments on them. And they were under $200 each (I forget the exact price).

Plus, I like places that have the jackets and pants separate, as I've got broader shoulders and need a bigger jacket. The traditional fitting would have me with a waist size that would look ridiculous.

I bought a nice suit for $300 at JC Penny. There was hardly anyone else in that department so I took my time and tried on lots of things until I found the right fit. I priced a rental for a weekend for a wedding and decided to buy.

I too have several suits available - if interested shoot me a message. Best of luck on your thesis!

Burlington Coat Factory was pretty decent. Coats for about $90, trousers and vests for about $40 a pop. Shoes for about $40. They even had a lady with a tape measure out there helping.

You know what if on a limited budget Check out a Goodwill or a St. Vinnies De Paul. Can sometimes find a nice suit in really good shape there and won't cost to much.

Just make sure to get them tailored. A well-tailored cheap suit is going to look 10x better than an expensive suit off the rack.

I second Burlington Coat Factory. You can pick up nice designer suits from $100-$150. Michael Kors, Calvin Klein etc. Then just go get them tailored at a dry cleaning place for cheap and you'll look like you spent $500+ on them. They also have hundreds of nice designer shirts and ties.

get a suit because
a) you should
b) you gotta get a job
a thesis defense is a big effin deal
have to at least outdress your committee. if it's a science field, this shouldn't be too hard.
what size you need?
i have a pretty nice hickey freeman suit 41 reg.
if you do buy something used, you want to have it taken in rather than let out in most cases. you have to get close to your size though. if you're a standard 42r you shouldn't get a 46 thinking you can get it tailored.
also would suggest being fairly ultra conservative with the styling, unless you're in the arts or something. no hipster stuff, slim fit etc. the goal is to look authoritative.
kinda suit that will make people think "he must be right" on a subliminal level.

I'm pretty sure the suits that these designers make for Men's Wearhouse and those types of stores are not the same quality. I'd get sized at one of those stores and then find a nice older suit on etsy or eBay. You can find real quality for cheap. I bought my wedding suit on etsy for like $60 and took it to a tailor, he complemented the quality and said they don't make them like they used to. Worth checking into at least.

If you are just looking for a nice fit with a sport coat, that EXPRESS store in the mall seems to have pretty good lookin stuff on sale. Good luck

We got my husband's suit at JC Penny then had it professionally tailored. As far as wanting to get as much as possible for the price, thrift shops have a lot of nice name brand stuff.
