Default amazingg early Christmas gift from girlfriend

This girl is officially a keeper.

She saw me eyeballing this beautiful thing on eBay and when I was out of the room picked this up for me as an early Christmas gift.

She has been incredibly supportive of my collecting and loves hearing about it.

Anyone else have a significant other who helps (or hinders?) your hobby?

She gets me, man - gives me that good old fashioned feeling...

Nice gift! That's awesome that she supports your hobby. A buddy of mine has a wife that is like that. She gets all excited when he finds something for his PC. I asked him if his wife has any single sisters, lol.

My wife is very supportive as well, it blows my mind when I see people with crazy gfs/wives who don't let them do anything. If anyone is in that situation, make sure you tell them there are FAR worse hobbies you could be involved in! (I.e. Gambling/Drinking/etc)

Agreed! Although I buy into quite a few case breaks. Would that be considered gambling?

I get that this thread is fun... but what a crazy sweeping generalization

If you drink too much? Of course that's bad... that's not a "hobby"... that's an addiction. I love craft beer, will spend money on it, but I'm also an adult about it.

Gambling? Same damn thing. The entire sports world is built on gambling these days. Card collecting is gambling. If you are an addict? That's an issue. Gambling itself? Hardly a problem.

Cards are no different. You can easily get just as addicted to sports cards, and buying, as you can to drinking or gambling your money away. There are way more people on this board (that won't admit) that they go into debt on their credit cards, paypal credit, etc... to feed their "hobby"

I spend more on cards then I do on beer or gambling. It isn't even close. I just budget it that way.

I just annoys me when someone posts something like "far worse hobby like gambling or drinking" when neither of those is worse, definitely not far worse, if you are responsible about it

She needs to teach my girlfriend haha. She isn't thrilled about my hobby but knows that her complaining isn't going to change anything. Plus she knows how an ultimatum would work haha. That said she has been asking me consistently for a few weeks what I want for Christmas. She wont give me any hints and has no distinct hobbies just regular girl stuff. (Makeup, clothes, shoes, purses etc) She knows I like sports cards and memorabilia but is so afraid of getting something I already have, dont want etc that she wont even consider it.

Back to the card, the point of this thread haha. Very nice selection as well, his 64 topps is my favorite issue of his. His first solo card and it has the ROY trophy. Congrats!

My wife & 3 year old son comes with me to card shows. Some sellers/dealers even give my son a pack of common cards and he loves it because he feels like he is doing the same thing as daddy. As long as I don't get too carried away with my spending, she doesn't mind my card collecting. She once bought me a 2001 SPx Albert Pujols Auto RC for my birthday

Awesome card, and awesome girl-keep her around!
My wife is very supportive, even if she teases me about it at times. When we were dating I wanted a Toledo Mudhens jersey. We went on a trip to the mountains for my birthday, I was in the hot tub and she got me a beer and said she would be right back. She came back out wearing only the jersey I had wanted. She bought me a signed UD Jordan UNC jersey for a wedding gift, and a signed UD Jordan ball for our 5th anniversary. She will encourage me to buy sometimes, and even tells me to buy 2 when I am thinking about a box. If I am on the fence she tells me to do it. She lets me keep a room in the house for my collection, even though its prized real estate she wants for her stuff as well (not to mention most the rest of the house is her stuff, this is my one true space). One time a local store had a blowout on logo basketballs of my favorite team -I love to get them signed-and she came home with 10 of them for me. She ain't perfect, but she's perfect for me.

While you are right that one can get addicted to cards and spend too much, it's not an apples-to-apples comparison with gambling or drinking. When you drink, you have nothing to show for it. When you gamble, chances are you are coming away on the losing end. With cards, at least you have something tangible that more than likely has value to someone. Big difference.

If you are drinking and gambling to the point of it being a "hobby" then it is probably worse than collecting cards, and not very "responsible". I'm sure most people's wives would rather them be in the basement going through little baseball cards, as opposed to being at the local tavern slammin' beers down until 2am...

That is the point I was making. Of course, drinking here and there, or betting on some sports games is no big deal. And of course you have people who blow all their money on baseball cards and I'm sure their wives don't appreciate that either. There are extremes on both sides.

Basically find a woman who respects what makes you happy, and make sure you do the same for her.

Mine made me sell my '52 Mantle.
But, she is still a keeper. She wished I sold everything, but at the same time she lets me do my thing and doesn't ask questions. So, I still have my fun....

Enjoy her support while it lasts - and before the really big bills come haha

Great card by the way, happy holidays!!

You're right. That card she bought him will need to be sold (along with many others) to finance the wedding.

My wife is indifferent. She is glad that I have a hobby, but doesn't get into all of the cards and stuff. Like when I pull something sweet and I want to show someone - I'll show my other buddies that collect.

You are again comparing extremes. You assume everyone is just sitting in their basement looking at cards and not on eBay spending their savings... and you are assuming that everyone at the local tavern sits there until 2am instead of just going for a beer or two to watch the game.

I get your point but I don't like the way you originally phrased it or are phrasing it now. You painted with a broad brush and using the word "FAR worse" is just crazy.

Well my ex took all my baseball cards in the divorce. She was very supportive while we were together. If you get married get a prenup. Went from a badass collection to crap in 2 sec
