Hey guys ,
I would like to say that I love collecting Basketball cards , ever since I was a kid collecting base cards and slowly improving my collection over the years, it brings me great joy chasing players and completing sets. I will continue to collect as a Hobby for a long time...... but sometimes I also like to make smart investments when buying cards and make a nice profit. Alot of players hit a Peek or have Hype in this Hobby , some Peek/Hypes are short lived while others last months/years .... some players might even have Multiple Peeks throughout the years. A player suddenly drops 50+ points , or becomes an all star or wins a championship and his prices skyrocket. I've been in a situation before where I had a rare limited 1/1 type card of a Player that just hit his Peek , his prices have Skyrocketed to crazy amounts and now I have to decide whether I should : A ) Sell the card during the Peek and make a Huge profit, but never be able to get the card back again B) Hold onto the Card as PC for years to come , but the card would drop down in value Alot compared to what it was worth during the Peek Hype. Its easy to say things like Just sell during the peek and buy the card back again when the hype goes down and prices drop . But if you have a Limited 1/1 , low numbered , RPA Jersey Numbered Type card that doesnt show up often and once its Sold , you will Never see the card again because it will be locked away in someones PC for a long time . Here's just a few examples I remember some years back there was a Huge Hype around 90's PMG Greens , All-Star players were selling for Crazy amounts and even below average players were fetching high amounts. ![]() ![]() If you had an Iconic card like 90's PMG Green of Jordan , Duncan , Kobe or Shaq ...... would you have Sold this card during the Hype few years back or held onto the cards in your PC for years to come ? ![]() The Blake Griffin National Treasures Logoman . This is prob the most Iconic / expensive Panini card ever Sold , I remember back during his RC years reading many threads about this card it was unbelievable . I believe the card ended up selling for $33,000 during the Peek . Right now its prob worth around $10,000 ? Steph Curry The past couple of years have been crazy for Steph Curry , his prices have Skyrocketed to crazy amounts , simple base cards are fetching hundreds. If you had any of his Rare low numbered cards , would you have Sold it during this Hype or Just held onto them ? ![]() ![]() Some other Examples : Dwyane Wade Exquisite 2003 RC RPA Gold /3 ...... Would you have Sold it during the Peek when he Won his First Championship / or When Miami got the Big Three .... or kept it as PC ? Chris Paul Exquisite 3/99 RPA Carmelo Anthony 2003 Exquisite RPA 15/99 ?? James Harden RC National Treasures RPA 13/99 ? Selling during the Hype when he went to the Rockets or keep as PC ? ![]() ![]() ![]() Anthony Davis has a chance to be the Best player in the NBA in a few years , his prices have been at an all time high . Would you sell now and cash in or Hold and have an amazing card in your PC to showoff down the road ? ![]() ------------------------------------------------------ I really hope everyone understands what Im trying to say , its kind of hard to put in words but just basically You have an Rare low numbered,1/1 , jersey numbered RPA Card of a Player ..... he hits a Peek and you can make a huge profit if you sell now ....... or hold onto that amazing card in your PC but the price would drop alot compared to what it was worth during the peek. Seems like eventually ALL Cards will go down in Value overtime. If anyone would like to share their experiences when they were in this situation that would be great ! ![]()

Sell at peak, donate a chunk of proceeds to a good cause. It will be easier knowing that you did something meaningful and it was important to let it go.
Everyone here is just renting their collection, in the end you never really own anything. So spend some time owning and enjoying it and be fine with moving on. Think of an old house. Imagine how many families "owned" the house. Not many since the average length of home ownership for the same house is 7-9 years. People shouldn't take this collecting hobby too seriously. This is cardboard that doesn't mean anything in reality. The only reason why people value it, is because other people want it. When I see these crazy sales of cards, all I think is "man, I hope these individuals give back in some other way." I am hopeful many do. Sorry to rant, but trying to help others see the big picture cause it's easy to get caught up in the chase. Myself included. Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |

Everybody is different, but for me personally........ If I have had the card for a while, I would sell it at its peak.
The rationale is because I think of the card as an investment. If you are a person who does not think with this mentality, then most likely you would hold onto the card into your PC even knowing that the value will go down and possibly create a loss. Unless you are a very wealthy person and money doesn't matter, then it makes sense to NEVER sell the card at the peak and hold it for your PC forever. Just my 2 cents |

Sell at the peak or where you think the peak may be and if you must have it later then stash away a fair amount and buy it back when it crashes as many do. There are a lot that don't but many do.

Well its a rhetorical question. Obviously, everyone would sell at the peak. The problem is....nobody knows when the peak is. Until its too late.

There are some things MONEY CAN'T BUY ....... If the card gets burned or flooded.... it would be gone FOREVER and all the MONEY in the world could ever bring it back...... BUT seriously, I doubt Billionaires spend their precious time on forums posting their opinions on all these threads. |

Sell Sell Sell. It can be tough but its only a card. You might not see that specific card again but surely you will be able to find something you like just as much, be it a card or something else.

I do think a lot has to do with one's financial situation. Someone who's in a tough spot, if they bought a card for $500 and suddenly it's worth $2000, they're gonna unload and take the money, as they should. But for someone who is financially secure and is just building a collection, they aren't going to sell unless they were to get a ridiculous price, or maybe if they had multiples. |

I don't know anyone who PC's from his grave. Everything is for sale and 40-50 years from now you will have more trouble moving cards than compared to the peak price. Doesn't make sense to have your children or grandchildren who don't know or care anything about cards try to sell them.

Sold some really nice cards way before peak, thought it was peak yet they continued to break through barriers for thousands more dollars.
Nobody knows when peak is. There are only two factors involved - Do you like profit? If so, sell when you have profited enough (whatever that is for you) Do you like cash instead of cardboard? Some cards you may never see again the rest of your life if you sell them. Always keep that in mind, especially for 1/1s and /10 type cards. Even NT RPAs /99. Even if you are incredibly wealthy 10 years down the road, you might not be able to buy a card back. I have some cards I'll never sell, because I believe I'd have 0% chance at ever owning them again. Value might go down, but I'm OK with that. Think about the guy who sold his Jordan green PMGs 5 years ago or 10 years ago. Or the Lebron Exquisite owners who needed the money at the time, or just wanted a quick flip. You're just never getting those cards back. |

I actually made another thread like this days ago, and I am always confused about this question, but somehow, I think it's crystal clear when and if to sell or not.
One thing concern, this hobby is really something for you to participate as a game lover, or if you still care about the profit, since after so many years, these are like stocks , either become a piece of useless paper or sell like a history document. If I am rich that the money I put in will not be used in my life needs, I will not sell every cards at it's peak. I will sell most of the cards and use the money to get even better cards, but some of the cards, I'll chose to keep it, like the 1/1 rc logoman, doesn't matter if it's a superstar or not, the card is not replaceable. But if someday I will eventually use the money that I put in the hobby, I'll sell the cards at it's peak no doubt. I can always get better cards, I can always get the chance to get cards from another superstar, the next Jordan or Curry, even if I still have cash in hand to buy , its still a no brain decision that sell cards at it's peak and reinvest on others will have so much bigger chances to get more money and more cards back. So, I'd say at most situation , we should sell the card at it's peak, but another member said it right also, we never knew when is the peak on many cards. Let's say, who knows, maybe one day Curry finds no more interest and got retired, how's his card will go? One day Precious metal became re-productable and flood the market, the price is gonna drop like XXXX, you will regret of keeping it. one thing to remind, most of the cards that makes us love it and precious it so much, is because it has unbelievable value, so when it's not , the love will fade......in most cases. |

Trying to time the peak is the worse way to play the prospect game. When things start to seem to good to be true you're most likely just about to miss the window. This summer was a perfect example with the Jordan rookies and I feel like the next bubble is most likely prizm. I always say nobody has ever lost money taking profit.
