Of course Yahoo has become more politically correct. On Yahoo comments you use to be able to leave up or down arrows. Now you can only leave nice little hearts. Their feelings must have been hurt that someone left an honest down arrow on a comment. There use to be some comments with 3 up arrows and 7834777 down arrows. The few up arrows were the ones for the pc people agreeing with the poster's comment. I think down arrows speak more then a few up arrows.

We've done this where I live (Austin, TX) and it's been a cluster for all involved.

We have 5 major toll roads that are privatized:

SH45
SH130
US183A
US290
SL1

4 of the 5 were built completely from the ground up. One toll was put on an existing roadway (SL1) as a type of HOV lane. The toll fluctuates based on supply/demand. It's more expensive during rush-hour as opposed to 4am.

These tolls have been a failure for everybody involved. Before jumping for joy over private funding for public works, here's what's happened where I live:

-Nobody drives on the roads. The companies who financed the roads are going bankrupt.
-Private companies have been granted eminent-domain rights
-Some people who drive the tolls refuse to pay, thus causing a glut of backlog in our courts over toll fees. This has caused car registration issues, as the companies owning the toll roads have had lawmakers pass laws that state you are unable to register your vehicle if you owe toll fees.
-People being charged who didn't actually travel the toll roads, 2 years late.


The incestuous relationship between these finance companies and the legislature has been frustrating for the citizenry. There have been some net positives, but overall it's been a loss for the citizens as well as the private companies.

We can all agree we need a major infrastructure upgrade. Asking private companies to do it for us hasn't been the correct answer where I live.

When I used Turbo Tax to file, there was an option to choose that insurance was too expensive. I think the rule is if insurance would cost more than 8% of your total income you would be exempt. If you really are thinking about dropping, I'd look into the options you have for not paying the penalty; it's pretty easy to avoid even if you fudge your taxes a little bit

It's not a true alternative, but more of something else to keep in mind if you go this route.

The IRS *cannot* force you to pay the penalty if you drop your insurance, and will not send it to collections. They *can* withhold it from your refund if you are getting one, though. If you're one of those people that gets a refund every year, you can adjust your W-2 to have less taxes taken out so will owe at the end of the year, and then just pay the taxes and not the penalty.

This was my plan from the beginning, but my company offered an HSA option with bare minimum insurance that still counts so I went that route. If it gets to be that the penalty is less than the premiums, I will be going back to this.
