Default Are cards dying out??

Is it just me or have wheels completely falling off since 2012??

I used to see so much activity on various boards and it seems this year is no better than the last few? Discouraging to say the least, I grew up buying packs of 1984 Topps at the local convenience store ...... Those were fun times back then!!

Maybe I just miss Topps

I think message boards are dying. Cards seems to be doing fine. Prices are lower but I think that is more on the mass production.

You think so? Seems like the 90's and vintage are picking up steam and in most cases drying up. I have a few sets I'm working on that you would see 5 - 10 pop up per month, now I'm lucky to see 1 from the sets pop up.

It's moved to vintage and, as mentioned above, a LOT of seasoned collectors have been focusing on older autograph sets, 90's inserts, etc. Also, there are no pokeman here.

Bottom line, cards are more expensive to produce, and with Panini DRASTICALLY overpaying for the NFL and NBA, it only reinforces with the leagues that they can continue gouging.

On top of that, making the actual cards is getting more expensive, players are more expensive to get signed for autograph deals, and then because they dont produce quality products, they cant recoup any of the cost.

The decisions Panini makes on a regular basis make me laugh, and its no wonder with how many former fleer employees are on the staff.

As a whole, they are not the only reason people are fleeing at record rates, but catering to group breakers and hoping your trashy sets sell just enough to close out the rest to blowout at 35% of dealer cost is not a plan.

This.. The few big Facebook groups I am in are each more active then most the big message boards put together. Most are closed and invite only and use a vouch system. Also there are card groups for your favorite team only as well. The high end board you see in those groups are second to none. Shoot the cardboard in general in the groups surpasses forums really.

Upper Deck makes mostly #@#@#@#@ in hockey cards...especially now with the exclusive obviously. Garbage, stickers and overpriced is what UD is about.
Panini actually had hard signed affordable cards in hockey months before UD could sign anyone.... These companies are always terrible when they get exclusives...

Topps makes ugly cards and overproduces big time but everyone still loves it...that's what is amusing.

Football has no future except for very short term hype for a few rookies.
It has no staying power. Everyone already got burned and left.
Everything position has no staying power except QB and 99% of QB's will be busts long term so that means 99.9% of cards will be worthless long term.

Imho, Panini makes way better basketball cards than football. Designs and attention to on card autos seems to follow basketball way better than football. Panini's path for football is already off on the wrong foot just gandering at Gala alone. It's a sticker fest compared to the bball version. I know there is more rookies to gather in football, but the brand manager needs a kick in the junk. It's possible they work harder on unlicensed baseball better than football at this point in time.

As for cards in general, market is generally good, but football has fallen to the worst seller among the 4 leagues. I'm actually in the camp that thinks vintage can't keep it's appreciation too much longer. Buyers in general for cards is slowly thinning as is, but when millenials become older, none of these cards prior to the 80s will be recognized. My generation won't appreciate the sports icons of the 50s in the same way. Players who thrived in the more modern market starting in the 90s will have the better chances of maintaining value. I'm not saying this will happen very soon, but maybe a decade from now.

As for cards, with all sports, the right players always sell. The football market may have taken a nosedive with the departure of Topps. And injury risks scares a lot of buyers in football for current players. Unless a guy wrapped up 10 healthy years with great stats, he's risky to buy unless value has absolute nothing to do with your card choices. It does with most I'd say.

So true. It's quite something when I'm still looking for those last ten 97 Skybox Rubies. It could very well be ten years before I finish that off.

Somebody go look at Derek Carr and Blake Bortles NT RPAs and tell me if football cards are dying out....

Even players like David Johnson and Todd Gurley are selling for $$$, and they aren't QBs. Go look at the sale prices on Ezekiel Elliot and Dak Prescott.

I've said all along that the NFL will be defunct one day down the line when everybody cries about concussions enough, but that day won't happen for a while.

And in the meantime, the FB card market looks perfectly healthy. Panini or not.

Tell us the prices of Gurley/Ezekiel/Dak in 3-5 years....

It will be like alfred morris/doug martin..

Bortles/Carr/Winston will be like Bradford/RG3/Cutler/Young/Kap/Foles

People think Winston is so amazing yet he was #28th in the league in QB rating...and no he won't get much better...

Everything looks healthy when New and Hot..

Dak and Zeke's prices will still be high because they are on, by far, one of the most highly collected teams.

Unless you hit a crazy low numbered RPA or a buyback (or Daisey Ridley, lol) 2016 Donruss has crap resale value. My two cents.
