Default Which do you prefer? PSA or BGS?

I've always been curious on hearing why people pick the grader they choose to use. We always here how PSA is better because of A and B as well as how BGS is better because of A and B. So, why do you choose you specific grader? Does it matter at all? Is it better for Vintage? Better for Modern? Why?

With these 2 factors out of the way:
1) The grader's personal opinion
2) How much $$ your order is

I prefer BGS

Reason:
A BGS 10 with good subs (or a pristine black lable), you're DEFINETLY get a PSA 10 on a cross-over.

However a PSA 10 will not even necessarily get you a BGS 10 (let alone a black lable) crossing over to PSA, in fact most likely, it'll be a 9.5 or lower. (there are exceptions, but i'm speaking generally)

BGS for so many reasons.

1. I have yet to see someone successfully pull off a forged BGS graded card successfully.
2. I don't do the "PSA registry" thing, and so I like not having to pay a premium for that, which, whether buyers realize it or not, they have to pay on a lot of cards.
3. I like the look of the cases better
4. Cases are more durable.

I could go on and on. To me, it's not close.

I prefer BGS

1. I have had the misfortune of being on the receiving end of a trimmed PSA 10, which I only discovered when I tried to switch the PSA 10 it to a BGS case.

2. I like the feel and the thickness of the BGS slabs better.

3. For newer cards, BGS 10s and BGS black labels are tough to beat, and I value them higher than a PSA 10 (see point 1).

BGS by a long shot. Far better looking slabs. Cards are secure and don't move around like they do in PSA cases. Sub grades are interesting.

I'll still buy a card in a PSA slab if I can't find it in BGS, or its significantly cheaper in a PSA slab (eg, this summer, Jordan's Jam City card graded 9 went for 30-50$ in BGS, but could be found for as low as 10-15$ in PSA).

BGS/BVG
Pros:
- Fantastic Protection for the card, easily the "best" of the TPG.
- They do not require membership to submit your cards.
- They provide Sub Grades (Centering/Edges/Corners/Surface) for each card they grade.
- STRONG Modern Release Presence. They are the "go to" TPG for Modern Cards
Cons:
- for cards prior to 1981, BGS becomes BVG (Beckett Vintage Grading) and Sub Grades are not provided
- While they scale from 1 - 10, with half point grades, they use different color/material Flips (the slip showing the card description and grade)
Grade 1.0 through 8.0 = White, paper flip
Grade 8.5 & 9.0 = Silver, metalic flip
Grade 9.5 & 10 = Gold, metalic flip
i feel this can be seen as "punishment" for the owner of the card.... oh, it's a lower grade? "F" You, heres an inferior flip because of it. This
also creates a visual eye-sore when cards of various grades are displayed together imo.
- BGS/BVG Slabs take up a lot of room in bulk.

PSA
Pros:
- Longest Presence in the hobby. Started in 1991.
- The power of their Registry Program cannot be denied.
- Strongest following in the overall hobby, especially in post-war through the 1990s due to their Registry Program.
- They also grade from 1 - 10 with half point grades, but unlike BGS, they use one color/material for all their flips, this leads to amazing
eye-appeal when cards of various grades are laid out together.
Cons:
- Membership is required for cheaper price points.
- Lack of Sub Grades is a turn-off to some.
- Slabs are considered by many to be "flimsy"
- Flips have been subject to scams

Much nicer cases. Really isn't even almost close IMO.

I prefer BGS in general.

The cases look much nicer and I like the category breakdown.

For me, I break it down by era. I prefer PSA for anything pre 2000. I like the vintage look of PSA slabs on older cards. Post 2000, I like the newer more modern look of the BGS slabs with the newer look of the more modern cards.

As someone stated, crossover is probably easier.

BGS
I actually like the subs, lets you know what and why. The cases, not even a comparison.
So...

New? Just as "case legit" as BGS

The new PSA cases are a VAST improvement, no denying that. Old habits die hard though, and some that were burned will never come back.

The old adage of "if its too good to be true......" still applies. Do your homework, learn what you are buying, and you'll be fine

I am referring new PSA cases. Compared to BGS, they look cheap, feel cheap, and are flimsy compared to BGS.
No comparison in my eyes.
I would much rather chuck a BGS slab against a wall, PSA, not so much. Also the no inner sleeve and card moving around in PSA holder I can't stand.

What are you guys DOING with your slabs? LOL

The new PSA slabs feel better and look better IMO, especially compared to their old ones

On the flip side id rather my card, which theoretically I should look at, not be encased in a block of lucite

There is something to be said for slim...

The slab is to protect. BGS protects more.

BGS for auto cards / modern cards. I like the subgrades and want the upside of a card grading BGS 10.

For mid 90s or earlier I think PSA is your best bet especially if looking to resell. Near impossible to get a card graded bgs 10 on a lot of those and PSA 10/9 outsell bgs 9.5/9 by a ton.

I like BGS slabs better as well as their service but prefer the actual grading of PSA.

Another topic that doesnt die haha

The simplest form I go by is PSA for vintage and BGS for modern. I only go deeper if needed.
