I'm seriously questioning the #9 and the #10 order placement.

10 is greater than 5, right?

Not really when you consider college football has had so many disputed and split champions.

Michigan has 11 but only 2 are AP championships. Ohio State has 8 overall. 5 AP.

Pretty sure college football started long before 1936. Thanks for the click-bait subject line OP.

Just an attempt by the AP to remain relevant in a college football landscape of a playoff committee and playoff games. The polls are now more meaningless than before. And - being transparent here - I can see the Horsehoe from my front porch and I'm an Alumni of the O, but how is OSU #1 when Alabama has almost as many titles under JUST Nick Sabon as Ohio State does total? C'mon Man!!

The AP polls didn't start before 1936, and the prevalence of schools in those polls is how they were ranked. Anything that happened before that isn't counted. And does the AP still feel the need to award a champ? I'm not sure if they still did the past two years. If not, those stats would not count either.

alabama claims 16 national titles. 10 of them are AP. I didnt agree with the poll until I saw that Nick Saban makes up for 60% of Alabamas all time number one rankings.

Thanks I am fully aware of when the AP polls started. To make the subject line this "Ohio State picked top football program of all-time" is a bit misleading. I guess if OSU fans want to hang their hats on this silly measurement, be my guest.

Yup...just shows that using a 1936-2015 timeframe is garbage.

Isnt it true in the old days of college football, many programs wins were counted by beating high school teams?

Its hilarious to see people complaining over the article because its the AP instead of a bias eSECpn poll LOL.

I don't like Alabama, but it is undoubtedly the best college football program ever.

Alabama doesn't deserve to be ahead of Ohio State. When Alabama was ranked #1 in the playoffs, they couldn't beat a 3rd string QB with almost no playing time under his belt.

Basing it on NCAA Championships ALONE is a poor way to determine the best ever. Maybe Alabama or Notre Dame has won more of them than OSU, but what was going on during the years when they weren't winning them??

Without question the (UNBIASED) AP got it right here.

I only see where they claim 4 before the AP and only 1 is legitimate. 1926 Stanford, 1930 Notre Dame and 1934 Minnesota were National Champions by Dickinson, the only ranking system of the time. Several of their post 1936 claims are weak. They claim 1964 despite losing to 10-1 Texas in the Orange Bowl, claim 1965 despite having 1 loss and 1 tie, 3 teams finished with 1 loss, claim 1973 despite losing to 11-0 Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and claim 1978 despite losing at home to 10-1 USC.

Ohio State doesn't deserve to be ranked ahead of Alabama because they couldn't even make it to the playoffs last year with that very same QB everyone thought was so good.
This poll is incorrect, I'm a Canes fan and even I know Bama has been the best team for the better part of College Football. The same type of people who rank Brady as GOAT because of championships are the same in here saying that Bamas championships doesnt make them greatest. 2 of the best coaches you'll ever remember are Bear Bryant and Nick Saban.

I think the poll isn't bad as far as accuracy. It is using hard data, so arguing over what 'should' be and the 1936 cut off is missing the entire point of the poll. I like the cutoff for 1936, football played before then wasn't really the same game. Claiming 11 Michigan National Championships when most were won by playing 5-6 smaller colleges every year doesn't mean much.
The one gripe I would like to see them add to the poll is a middle ground for top five finishes. Maybe 3 or 5 points for the number one ranking, and then the two points for finishing in the top 5. Or simply drop the 10 to a 5 for nattys. The jump to 10 points seems like a big gap.

The poll is math.

You can say the underlying logic behind the poll is flawed (how they decided to assign points) but the poll isn't "incorrect" because it's simple addition. It's based on facts that have already happened.
