However, that leeway does not equate to carte blanche. There are limits:

For OT, I am the most lenient mod by a fair margin and I closed that thread.
You made a wise decision to delete that thread. It was off the rails before the racial slur. So many people jumping to crazy positions. I would not have described the thread having a civil tone.

I like you and respect your opinion but do disagree. I think that considering the topic at hand and how inflammatory it was and could have been, that it indeed was civil with the exception of a solitary racial slur I saw levied. I was out for the day so won't speak to what may have been posted after I was last online but at the point that I last logged off, I thought things were mostly ok. Having said that, I do understand why everything was deleted and respect the decision that the mods made.

With members being banned or suspended the Mod should not be admonished for deleting the thread, he should be commended.

The issue is at the core of this type of thread's inherent unsustainability. People post their political, religious, and racial views in search of approbation, or the prospect of converting the beliefs/opions of others. False security exists in group ethos, irrespective of veracity.

That thread was rife with argument, the very nature of which is to alter an opinion or belief. Similar threads will consistently unfold poorly, which is why BO's OT rules are highly practical. Unless I've spoken with someone through pm's, my political and religious affilitions are unkown, which I've deliberately witheld. In the presence of earnest discussion, in some effort to affect positive change, I would divulge that information.

Full metal is banned? Hip Hip hooray!

Here is a summation of all of his posts in one succinct paragraph:

"I am better than all of you. No, seriously I am. Bragging? No, I don't brag. Here's a picture of my house on the ocean. Did I mention I know more than all of you about money? No? Well, I do. I'm going to retire at 40. I have 9 Master's degrees. Also, I'm better than you."

See you with your new name...

Personally, and this is just my opinion....

I believe you should allow political and religious discussions.

Yes, they can get heated, but they can also be had in a civil way as well.

I've been on plenty of sites where political and religious discussions are allowed and those places are running just fine.

But I also understand why you may not want to have P&R....so whatever.

It's very easy to do. Have a private subforum where users have to be vetted before posting. Obviously things would be a bit more sordid there, but any post that clearly stepped over the line (personal attacks, etc), the poster's posting privilege would be removed. I've been to several forums that operated like that.

We can't have that, though. There needs to be more room for more intellectual topics like, "See deez nekkid gurls lollerderby," and, "what are you having for dinner next Tuesday."

Hey, what you know, GroundSupport has been suspended yet again. Was that from this thread or something else?

Something else, because I saw on Saturday that he was on another vacation.

Thing is, this is a forum sponsored by an online retailer. I feel like we are lucky to even have an off topic section here. I don't blame them for running a right ship. Some people can't control themselves so if a mod feels like things are going south, then yes, delete the thread, hand out bans and suspensions if need be, and move on. If you want to have a an open discussion, go join Reddit where that is open and not tied to a retailer who is fighting for business against countless other retailers.

Because moderating a bunch of dummies who can't control themselves when discussing religion or politics is not the purpose of the board. It would be a full time job for more than one person to keep it even remotely clean, and that's not what a company that sells trading cards is interested in.

They should have quoted some rap music lyrics to get their points of view across.

I didn't see the thread or comments in question, but if it was a racial/sexual orientation discussion that caused the thread to be closed and users to be banned... did we check to make sure those reporting the posts/thread were of the race and/or sexual orientation that was being attacked or talked poorly of?

What is the relevance? If something is in poor taste it is in poor taste, end of story.

Thats irrelevant, and even if it was, how exactly would you prove it? And if someone is African American and may say something racist but thinks nothing of it doesnt mean another African American doesnt think its any less racist.

I might be wrong but I think they might be referring to a series of posts where someone a week ago posted things some male members found offensive. However a moderator said something a long the lines of its not a big deal. Had a female member reported it or been offended by it however I would have taken it more serious. I am paraphrasing how I recall the sequence.
