Well pretty simple, off all the rock bands in the 80's who do you think is the best in terms of success? Argue! Also if you would like to add notable honorees please do so.

Crue, GnR and Poison should be high on any list. There were so many its really hard to nail it down.

I give it to Genesis. Duke, Abacab, self-titled, Invisble Touch. How can you go wrong with Phil, Mike and Tony?

While Metallica sits high on my list for 80's music, they are a little heavy to fall under a rock classification.
GnR, Crue, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Cinderella, Poison, Skid Row, Van Halen, U2 (in no particular order) As for Genesis or Queen, get that ... outta here...they have no place in this discussion. |

These are two of my favorites, along with DIO

Depends on the sub-genre, I suppose. If we're talking overall, it's hard to argue against U2. They were amazing throughout the decade without a single weak release on their resume. Boy, War, October, The Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum...all strong records.
Guns n' Roses is a good thought, but too small of a sample size for me to truly consider. They only released one full-length album, albeit one of the greatest of all-time in Appetite For Destruction. Lies, which is an EP with a couple of very memorable tracks, was also a great album, but again it's a small sample size when compared to bands like Genesis, U2, or Van Halen, who had records throughout the entire decade. |

Grew up on Metallica, finally saw them live at Lollapalooza last summer. Was freaking amazing. Bone chilling and raw. Don't know if I would call them the best of the 80's though.
If we are including Queen then they are the clear winners. If we are saying best band ever, then Led Zeppelin is the only choice. AC/DC is legendary. That reminds me, some weird U2 album ended up on my iTunes with album cover that looks like a dude giving another dude fellatio. I really need to delete that garbage. Count them out.

Success in the 80s? If it becomes a "who is your favorite", that's going to be all over the map with opinions. Regardless of how anyone feels about them, that would probably go to U2 or The Rolling Stones simply based on the money they brought in and the tons of songs that seemed to play constantly on radio stations nationwide!

Metallica.
Tons of other amazing rock bands during that time too, love that music still to this day, but.... Metallica.

The OP states 'success'. And I'm assuming the OP means 'rock' bands and not '80s music (i.e. A-ha, Dexy's Midnight Runners, etc.). Therefore, it's probably a toss-up between Motley Crue, Poison, U2 (even though they're probably more 'pop'), AC/DC, Bon Jovi, and probably several others.
Now...which bands people PREFER? That's a completely different topic, and it seems that people are straying into that territory, some even naming bands that weren't even making music in the '80s.

My Top 5
U2 - Excellent musicianship and great songwriting and didnt shy away from taking a political stance The Police - Changed the game. Blended genres, funk, jazz, reggae, etc. Three musicians at the top of their talents. Depeche Mode - Pop Music/Electronic Music owes a great debt of respect to this group. And they still make albums/sell out stadiums. Guns N Roses - Their music still sounds fresh. Made a lot of classic songs. Unmistakable guitar playing and infused their music with heart and soul. Van Halen - Changed the game too. EVH, Michael Anthony, AVH and David Lee Roth created some of the best 80's rock ever heard. Great showmanship too.

Poison for me, but the 80's had lots of great acts.
now, if you asked me in the 80's, 6 year old me would say whatever band made the Ghost Busters theme song.

AC/DC and Def Leppard should be in the realm of discussion.
Funny.. go back in time to 1985-86 and ask the question and Metallica probably doesn't even crack the top 50. I just remember many people despising them in high school. |

First of all 80's Metallica is not rock. It is Thrash Metal.
Even though not exactly my favorites, top bands have to include: Van Halen Bon Jovi Aerosmith AC/DC ZZ Top Bruce Springsteen
