![]() Love me some Rick and Morty. But seriously, this thread is born out of some of the comments I've seen in the Fears/Phobias thread. What are you here for? What gives you purpose? What do you hope to accomplish by the time of your death? For myself, I view my life as serving three purposes: 1. My purpose to myself: Probably the most complicated and convoluted of all the purposes. Because I know myself so well and know almost every area in which I fail to live up to who I could potentially have been, I will never satisfy this purpose. At 29 years of age, the best understanding I have is that I should measure myself by how well I fulfill purposes #2 and #3. 2. My purpose to my immediate loved ones: Be a good, faithful, strong husband. Someday be a good father who pushes my children to be more than even I believe they can be while at the same time loving them no matter what place they eventually come in. 3. My purpose to the world: This is the purpose with the most flexibility. The most obvious purpose would be to "do no harm." That one seems pretty will in hand. Beyond that, I would like to provide some insight into the future of religion. Mind you, I'm not advocating any particular religion, I'm speaking strictly in the anthropological sense. Given that humans will eventually leave the planet Earth and that religion has long served as a "rational" narrative to stand in the gap of the unknown, I believe the importance of religion will be reemphasized once humans leave Earth and venture out into the unknown. Again, this thread isn't about my own personal purpose. I'm curious to see how others view their lives and the purposes they serve. BO is a great community. Even way down here in Off Topic! |

I find it hard to think or live my life this way. I tend to just take it moments, I try to do the right thing in whatever moment I'm currently in. My largest goals are to be a good husband to my wife. Anything outside of that it's a day to day thing for me. I try to be nice to people and do good things for people when the situation presents itself. I really don't think I have a "bigger purpose" in life other than to live the life I have and do what makes me happy.

Probably just to give and give and take nothing in return.

"...if nothing we do matters then all that matters is what we do. Because that's all there is. What we do. Now. Today." ..."Because, if there's no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world."

I view my purpose in life is to just keep living until I die. Nothing specific.

I don't think I believe I have a specific purpose in life, but I do know I want to be remembered in some way or another. Hopefully for something good down the road such as my photography. As long as I am not known for a serial killer or doing something completely stupid and becoming a viral sensation on the internet that never goes away.

Frenzy, I know from your past posts that you are a deep thinker and this thread is no different. From time to time I can be as well but I mean no disrespect when I say that I just don't get the "purpose" conversation. I can't wrap my mind around the human need to feel like they are a part of something grander.
No doubt we are all born with unique skills, abilities, passions, temperaments etc and some of us use them for greater good than others but I still don't view that as a "purpose". I've spent my whole adult life in service of others and I didn't do it because it was a calling and I haven't done it for recognition, I just followed what I was wired to do. Is that a purpose or just following the trail of cheese based on the sheer dumb luck of my genetic makeup?

When I feel stressed, it is much easier to think about how meaningless, ultimately, my actions day to day really are.
Do I feel like I serve no purpose? Sometimes. Do I really care? Not really. When I enjoy something and someone tells me that it is a waste of time, I don't really care. Really, even if I accomplish something that is notable and people remember my name for the rest of human history, do I really care? I mean, I won't be here to see it. The more you think about the "purpose of life", the easier it is for me to realize that I really don't care. As long as I am happy and I keep happy people around me, I don't care.

My only purpose in this life is to be a better father and provider for my children then my father was. Everything else I do in this short time on Earth is secondary.

The meaning of life is to give life meaning. Live in the moment, take the next best step based on morals, values, and ethics. Get out of self and live by the will of the universe. Be useful.

To make sure my kids have what I don't have -- not in a spoiled rotten way, of course.

To get a clear view of the passing parade, and maybe walk in it once in a while.

As of this moment, 3 of the 4 threads underneath this one are
"The Old Days" "Going to Vegas" and "Can't stay out of the casino" Those there might cover it for a lot of us, purpose-wise... |
