Default That time you tried to be a good Samaritan, but...

A few weeks ago one of my best friends told me he was proposing today so we (my wife and I) planned on meeting him and his new fiancee out for some drinks to celebrate. He decided that he wanted to go to some Whiskey Bar in the Midtown West/Hell's Kitchen area. Now I HATE going that far away from my apartment on the Upper East Side but it's his day so we were going.

For you non-NY'ers many NY'ers don't like to leave their neighborhood for whatever reason and I am one of those people. Its about a $20 cab ride each way or public transportation which is especially painful on weekend nights. It's just far away by NY standards.

So we get lucky and hop in a cab right in front of our building. My wife reaches down and notices a phone. Well I tell her to give it to me and I will try and get in touch with the owner to get them their phone back. Well 20 minutes later the phone rings (while still in the cab ride trek to the other side of the world) and the guy starts asking me if I can help him out. I try to explain to him that I am on my way to hell's kitchen and that I can leave it with my doorman when I get home for him to pickup in the morning. Well that isn't good enough for this guy (kid) who lost his phone. I told him where I am going and he asks if I can just meet him where he is (obviously the upper east side right near my apartment) because it is convenient for him. I repeated that I was going out for the evening, if him and his friends wanted to swing by to get the phone they could and I'd have it for him or I could leave it with my doorman for him to pick up.

His response "do you know how far away that is??!?!?!!". Well yes, I do, because I too live in the city and I am sitting in the cab. He then asks me if I can bring it to him and just help him out by meeting him up there and he will be a sport and buy me a beer. Oh sweet, $40+ in cabs both ways, skipping celebrating my friends engagement (which I told him thats where I was going), over an hour in a cab to waste my Saturday night and he will be a sport and buy me a beer. Well after trying to reason with him for a few more minutes he goes "well sir, let me explain, I'm in a santa suit". For those non-NY'ers today was Santa-Con in NY. Thousands of post grad (and some older) people dress up in their santa's finest and bar hop around the city. Well this told me what I needed to know, he was TRASHED. Again I offered to drop the phone at my apartment when I returned home or he could meet me and again he told me that wasn't good enough for him. It wasn't good enough that I didn't take his phone, didn't throw his phone out, didn't just leave it there but it really wasn't good enough that I wouldn't ruin my evening of celebration for him.

I ended by saying, hope you had fun Santa, I am giving the driver the phone back hopefully he can work it out and drive the phone back to you.

I would've happily told him where to get the phone and he could've gotten it at any time after I returned home. Oh drunken foolishness.

Anyone else have any fun good Samaritan stories where it's just not enough for the person that screwed up?

Wow, is the human race doomed? What a tool.

I found someones food stamp card a few hours ago on the sidewalk at a local grocery store. I should've turned it in there but I thought I could call the number on the back and get it to the person. Nope. They said mail it to xxx or destroy the card. The balance on the card was $350 or so. I live in a small town, the person didn't sign the back. So..I call the grocery store, owner was looking for it for hours. I live 20 mins away from said store. I drove back and dropped it off. I found out she had a baby only a week ago. I don't twitter, but #karma #payitfoward

He was SMASHED so I'm confident he doesn't remember. That being said it's a building with between 150-200 apartments so no real chance he knows which is mine.

Makes 2 of us.

And karma thanks me by my cab driver on the way home almost killing us. He obviously wasn't paying attention and was flying through Central Park. Realized all the cars in front were stopped so he slammed on the breaks and swerved into the on coming traffic lane. Then 3 seconds later he called someone and put his conversation on speakerphone. It was a glorious evening.

Lol, I've never been to NYC but this 100% sums up what my impressions of it are. Having said that, it's still on my bucket list. For some reason, big cities fascinate me even though I dislike so many things about them.

If you come here let me know. When I told the driver I didn't want to hear his conversation and didn't feel comfortable with him on the phone he begrudgingly hung up. Considering its illegal to hold your phone and talk while driving AND he just nearly killed me...Of course he gives me an attitude like I'm the devil. 99% sure he was texting (also illegal) while driving and that's why he almost crashed. Swerving head on is not the best response.

Long long night.

Sounds like an episode of How I Met Your Mother that doesn't have a happy ending.
Luckily, most people have what we call manners in the Midwest, even drunk they would have been reasonably willing to drive over and get the phone themselves! Plus, probably never catch most people in a Santa costume, unless you're getting paid to do it.

While on a beach vacation my father-in-law and I went out for a joy ride in his truck and saw a kid on side the road fooling with his obviously broken bike. We rolled up, windows down, and asked if he needed some help. He looked bewildered and said, "no sir."

Father-in-law, genuinely one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life, says "Well can we give you a ride somewhere?" The kid looks horrified. "NO! I DON'T NEED ANYTHING!"

After we rolled off he laughs, "I guess he thinks we're weirdos." I said, "that's where we are as a society. At least he doesn't talk to strangers..."

I generally hate 80% of the people I ever meet.

Then again, maybe the common denominator is just me. Maybe I'm just a vengeful, jealous slut with a horrible outlook on life.

So let me ask a New Yorker

you're allowed to drink publicly on the transit any other time of the year except during SantaCon?

"In preparation for the booze-fueled festivities, the MTA and the Long Island Rail Road have banned alcohol on their trains all weekend"

Ever eat at "A Salt and Battery"? That's some crucial fish and chips. If not, consider Karma giving you a great place to eat.

You can on commuter trains. Not the subway/bus.

So just a question.

If you get hurt in a cab while the driver is being a moron like above (and not in a car wreck) can you be compinsated?

Obviously in a wreck you would be covered but what about injury due to neglegence?

No clue but my guess would be yes.

i've never had a cabbie in new york not on his phone speaking whatever language he speaks. My favorite part is when I have to tell the driver where i need to go and he has no idea, so i have to give him directions. Mind you i'm not from new york city but apparantly i know my way around better than cab drivers do

Yes, they are always on the phone. I deal with that but lower my tip when they are. When they happen to put it on speakerphone it's not acceptable. I've never had anyone not know how to get somewhere, but they obviously don't always take the fastest route.

Went to NYC once for a trade show. Cab driver gave the "cutting throat sign" to another driver. Didn't get to see anything but the airport, convention center and a psycho cabbie.

-There was some flooding several years ago that my then-wife got stuck in. I headed out to push the car out, got it into an adjacent lot. There was a guy in a porsche 928 that also got stuck. So, late at night, pouring down rain, i told him i'd push him, too, if he steered it to the right to get into the lot. Tried pushing the car, didn't move. Wife had a bigger car i handled just fine, so i thought he must've had the break on or put it in park. Asked him, he said no, in neutral, so i went back to give it a heave-ho. COuldn't move it, so i told him to wait for the firefighters coming down the street.

After the firefighters got him into the lot, one of them told me the guy had his foot on the brake. Said the driver thought it just prevented the car from rolling backward on me/them.

...
