Don't Kill The Messenger: Rumor about a BO Member At The National

I assure you that I am not trying to troll, cause any problems, make up fake stories etc etc. I want to approach this as adult like as possible.

I have heard from a very credible source (I've always wanted to say that) that a prominent Blowout member was seen/admitted to adding an inscription to a prospect auto then getting it slabbed. I don't want to share the name quite yet because it can ruin someones reputation if it isnt true (I know there will be a ton of angry witch hunters saying WHO IS IT?!?! WHAT CARD IS IT?!?!!). I ask that if anyone else has heard this or can confirm, please PM me before we air out who it was.

I do not know what card it is, I was just told that it's that of a prospect.

EDIT: I have confirmed which card it is and it's on ebay. I will await to hear from someone else if they heard the same thing.

EDIT 2: The card may not have been slabbed at the National after all, but the person who told me says that the seller admitted to inscribing the card. There are no other cards with an inscription like it.

EDIT 3:

He clearly didnt inscribe it.

Edit 5:

My "source" just gave me permission to post his interaction with the seller.

After telling him he did the inscription the following interaction took place:

Source: "Why are you telling me this?"
Mike: "What are you going to do about it?" and then laughed.

My source chooses to stay out of this. If you guys want to choose a valued, trusted member, I can give him my source, he can contact him for confirmation as long as he doesn't tell everyone who it is.

Edit 7:
For what it's worth the "source: did PM me.

Here is his posting to me...

I was at nationals and Mike told me he inscribed it himself. When i asked why he was telling me that, his response was 'what are you going to do about it'

I also told the source to send me more information.
Where exactly
When
Any other specifics and of there were any others around.

Lastly I told him....
I feel the thread will be deleted eventually if you do not come forward and tell everyone specifics about this.

Not saying now but maybe later tonight.

As for now...
Can you give me things you remember. I will not disclose in the thread but would like to know.

What day?
Where exactly it was told to you (His table etc)
Do you remember the shirt he was wearing (maybe it can be photo matched)
Had you met him before?
Was anyone else around that may have heard it?

Personally if someone had told me he altered a card I would come forward becuase I have no tolerance for scumbags and have thick skin.

So ball is in the court of the source now.

Believe what you will but if this did happen and from recent things I/we have seen here on Blowout it would not shock me.

It would also not shock me that if Mike did do this and came clean he would still be an active member of this board because he seems to have a lot of people that "have his back"
Edit 8:
I just layered the 2 autograph in photoshop. We have an EXACT match.
Edit 9:
Couldn't get them exact due to the angle of the inscriptioned one but here it is:

What is the point of this thread without any details?

Bob Loblaw 08-02-2013 08:07 AM

...how many mainstream prospect cards have optional inscriptions? Chrome don't; Sterling cards don't; Platinum cards don't.... Elite used to, but not any more... inscriptions are rare.

Card/member added to OP. Again, just the messenger here. I could be wrong, but after doing research (I dont know much about baseball cards), the social media cards are /10 and the fact my guy says he admitted to it makes me believe its true.

jlzinck 08-02-2013 08:24 AM

If true it doesn't surprise me. It seems we have more and more people who will do something that is sketchy or worse for the cost of a pizza. And then another money grubbing whore will buy it and sell it as a 1/1 because the "experts" at a grading company slabbed it so it has to be real. Dogs and fleas people.

lakesidez 08-02-2013 08:26 AM

Well I guess I can add "inscriptions" to my do not buy list along with jersey\patch cards. it's unfortunate what people do to try and make an extra buck, arg!!!

NeedChapmans 08-02-2013 08:27 AM

Hold on now everyone ... before Mike is sent for execution / give him a chance to come on this thread and comment on what has been said.

Mike ...

Only buy inscriptions if the back of the card says "This is an official inscription card", and only if that sentence is not written in marker ;)
Marker color doesn't look the same. How did Beckett's ace graders not see that?
Anyone else find it weird that this card is pictured this way?

Mike has a nice scanner, and all of his other auctions have scans. Maybe it is to disguise the color difference? This has been running for five days already and was slabbed 7/23. So it's not like it's an "I'm at the National and pulled and slabbed and listed this thing from my phone just now" situation.

No habla espanol. I tried to find a checklist for the social media refractors but I couldn't find one. It would be nice if a real one would pop up to compare handwriting, but if he doesn't have any then he wouldn't have added it to this one by "mistake"

Sikkcaden 08-02-2013 08:48 AM

Log on to rotoworld and see this on the front page:

Twins recalled OF Oswaldo Arcia from Triple-A Rochester.
The 22-year-old hit .257/.317/.408 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 53 games earlier this season with the Twins. A top prospect, Arcia should receive plenty of playing time. Scoop him up in AL-only leagues if he's available.

I found it ironic lol

Srt42004n 08-02-2013 08:58 AM

So your saying Mike is inscribing his own cards? interesting seeings it is BGS 8

NeedChapmans 08-02-2013 08:58 AM

Ok, so think as to why someone would do something like this. If you know Mike, you know he grades cards ... most every card he can (auto and base).

That being said, this Arcia refractor auto is so off center, that he would never grade it. It's easy to see this would come back no better than the grade he received because of the OC LtoR ... so why was it graded by him?

Well, he may have pulled it, saw it and said "I wonder if I can fake an inscription" since the card is of small value. Not unreasonable to think Arcia may have accidentally added a twitter handle to a card, even though he wasn't part of the program, so let's try that AND let's try and get it graded to see if BGS can authenticate such an auto.

So far ... no problem. Had he gotten this card back from BGS and put up a thread about it, and the experience ... I think it would have been very entertaining to read, and to bash BGS for authenticating such a signature. Sadly though, it looks like this went one step further. The second this went on eBay, and was made available for sale takes this to an entirely different level.

Pure conjecture of course / still waiting to hear the defense.

Sounds to me like he did it to show what BGS did and make the BIN high with no intention of selling it. Just listed it on Ebay to show the world.
Can someone explain to me what this guy did wrong (what does "inscripting" and "slabbing" mean?).

An inscription is when a player is signing an auto on a card and either in place of or in addition to the auto they write something else. Can be a nickname, the school/team they're on, etc. Something else is written on the card, and they are popular with collectors because there are generally not that many of them.

The term "slab" is just in reference to getting the card sent in to a grading company to have it graded (in terms of quality). The better the grade the more value it carries. The use of the word slab just refers to the fact that it comes back in a plastic case with the grade(s) listed at the top of the case.

mikecancelliere 08-02-2013 09:50 AM

Don't want it don't buy it... Just because its listed at 200 doesn't mean I'll get it
Sounds to me like he did it to show what BGS did and make the BIN high with no intention of selling it. Just listed it on Ebay to show the world.
Where exactly do you gather that? Or are you just hoping? Cause it sounds like youre just hoping.

Oh ok I got it now.

Thank you and the other guy on top of this page for helping me out without acting "jerky"
Don't want it don't buy it... Just because its listed at 200 doesn't mean I'll get it

It was pulled like that and I slabbed as an 8 to protect myself from people bitching
So you pulled it? And someone else, that wasnt you or the propsect added the twitter name with a different marker prior to being pack inserted? Ok cool

False.

1. The ink is obviously different
2. Thats not Arcia's writing
3. You didn't scan it like the rest of your cards so the ink diff. wouldn't be as noticeable.

You're not fooling anyone dude.

Count me as another that is disappointed by this situation. It should have never been listed on EBay. His responses so far lack substance. I am sure he is busy right now, so I'd recommend waiting to respond rather than continuing.

No it wasn't Mike. You post on here enough where you would likely have started a thread about the card ... but you didn't.

Your first post in this thread would also have been something better than the defensive POS you wrote 10 minutes ago.

What in the world are/were you thinking?

I can tell you without a doubt one was signed with a sharpie and one a staedtler with the ink colors side by side. So whomever did it wasnt too smart.

The only other explanation is that this was an elaborate ruse by the OP to defame the seller in some sort of Arcia-auto turf war. Probably not.

I'm going to need to get a second bag of popcorn it would appear.

LOL ... I believe Occam's razor would apply here.

This is odd, Mike has been great to deal with and all around stand up since I first met him

He has at times had thousands of dollars of my cards and gotten them to the people who bought them without issue

I know he has a table at the show with a LOT of high dollar stuff on it so I am sure he is very busy and responding from his phone

Not making excuses for or defending anyone, just saying I have a good hobby working relationship with him and I am confused by the whole situation and will be checking back to see what unfolds
