Default Autograph or case hit?

I was looking to buy one of the new kabooms of a player I like and the price was so high. I’m torn because I’m not sure I want to spend that much on a non autographed or memorabilia card.

Wanted to ask, which do you prefer and why? I know there is a huge market for downtowns and kabooms and everyone has their preferences.

"Case hit" is made up marketing to sell boxes. A "created" market pushed by breakers and the makers of the cards to keep buying crappy boxes for that "jackpot" chance.

Autographs and rookie cards are actually rare and not printed every year.

That’s the thing. For the money some of them go for I can just buy an autograph of a goat like Mahomes or Brady. Possibly even a rookie autograph

I'd buy what you like. Personally, I've never seen the appeal of a Kaboom or a Downtown - why would I want some cartoon-type card of a player?

For the money those go for, I'm personally more interested in cards for my Eagles PC - rookie cards, hard-signed autographs, and player cards from players from the franchise dating back to its inception in 1933.

But everyone's collection is their own, and curated to their tastes. I don't rip wax any longer, so there's no chance I'd hit a Kaboom or Downtown of a PC Eagles player, and I'll never buy one, so I'll never have one.

Some people don't PC a team - they have a few favorite players, or chase the rookie QB class each year. Whatever makes you happy is what you should collect.

This is very true. I was just looking at them because I saw one of Jalen Hurts and it looked really cool. But I can get a really nice Jalen auto for almost half the price

I still think its absurd the prices these Kabooms and Downtowns go for. Or the Prizm parallels too.

Give me an on card auto over one of those any day.

Star auto over star case hit.

Semi star case hit over semi star auto.

That’s my problem with this hobby, you can set a budget, say $600 for a card. You can end up finding two cards of similar price in listing yet completely freaking opposite from one another such as a card from a “high end” set with an auto vs. an insert from a low end product. Often, I just end up getting overwhelmed with the choice of what to buy and end up not buying anything at all lol. I feel much better spending my money on real life things and not on cardboard.

To answer the question..
I’d vote for an on-card auto every time.

Especially of an established player with long term value like Mahomes, Brady, etc.

The only years of Downtown I would be interested in are pre covid years before they ramped up production. 2018 and 2019 Downtown and Kaboom! are actually pretty rare compared to what's out there the last few years. The same could be said for Prizm silvers too.

In 10 years, a Mahomes rookie auto or nice rookie is gonna be worth money, no way some 2029 Mahomes Kabooom or 2031 Mahomes Kaboom will be worth more OR rookie cards have lost all prestige

I think even a second or third year auto will be more significant in the long run

Rookie case hits will probably hold some value. I am not sure just a random guy will though.

I'd take an oncard auto of a guy who rarely signs over a case hit anyday. My issue with the "case hits" is no serial #. You get a popular case hit in a retail set (Kabooms/Downtowns) and you could literally just keep printing them.

Sounds more like you’re trying to convince yourself not to spend that much money over truly not thinking the Kaboom is better or wanting it more. You wouldn’t of made this thread if you thought the auto was such a better option as being implied now lol

Your profile pic is literally a Jalen Kaboom lmao if you can’t afford it/don’t feel it’s good value ok but don’t lie to yourself that something else is better because of it. People always justify/discredit what they own/don’t own. There’s old inserts worth a ton now people prob said the same about back in the day, I don’t have a personal opinion on auto/case hit but people can hate on them Downtowns/Kabooms gonna keep pulling money in

A sticker card of someone’s initials passed off as an autograph, hard pass.

Short-term flip: (within a year of release) Case hit

Everything else: Auto

Essentially, all sports cards are simple paper products. There is no guarantee that they are worth anything more than the paper they are printed on. However, when you add an autograph to that piece of paper, it guarantees a higher value.
