Default Willie Mays Auction

I was looking through the catalog for the 'Willie Mays Collection' auction over at Hunt Auctions just now, and wondered if anyone could answer this question. Why does the Willie Mays collection have so many terrible quality PSA 1 cards? Was this Willie's "thing" or something?

I wouldnt say it was his thing. He kept cards from throughout his playing days. A lot of players did. I mean, wouldnt you?

Bubble gum cards from the 60's are not what they are right now. That is, a collectors item. He appears to have treated them like any other low value memento he had. And most likely just tossed them in a drawer or kept in a box.

60+ years later, they were dug out along with his other stuff. Sent to be graded, and here we are.

All worth more than matching grades of the same cards. As these were his, and he held on to them over the years.

That makes sense, thanks for your insight.
