Default Are all inserts created equal?

I was talking with Ohio lawyer in the Griffey thread and it
Hit me.
If inserts of a player of griffeys caliber numbered 1/350 from 2001
Are considered meh /average /who cares ?
What does that say about the 1/350 cards we covet and chase today ?
Is the difference they are still playing today so more eyes on the players?
What are the different eras of insert production and collecting?
So many seemingly subtle nuances to know as a collector.
Makes my head spin.
You would think 1/350 from 2001 is darned low for the time?
But apparently not.
As reflected in pricing…..
While the 1/350 today player vastly more expensive …..
Any clarification appreciated
By this noob and maybe others …..

Supply and demand.

Some inserts are rarer than others, and some inserts are more desired by collectors than others.

Yes. Listen to puddlemonkey. Nobody buy Reds Griffey. Keep them cheap for me.

FYI OP, /350 isn't even considered all that rare in the 90s either.

It just blows my mind that a 1/350 Griffey insert 2001
Can go for less than a numbered color 1/350 insert from today or recent card ?
You would think the hof one would smoke the recent card ?

Just like baseball players, the hobby is divided into eras. Early 90's serial numbered inserts are different than late 90's. Early 2000's inserts are different than late 2000's and so on.

Go look at 1991 and 1992 Donruss Elite inserts numbered to /10,000.

Your
head
will
explode

Sometimes its not about the serial number but the quality of insert.

Yes, a 1991 donruss elite Rickey/10,000 will sell for $80-$140 whereas a 2023 chrome platinum Rickey/100 will sell for $10-$20.

It depends on the visual appeal and overall popularity of the card/set.

There are low-numbered inserts/autos that nobody cares about, and higher-numbered ones that are very popular.

One example of this would be Heritage Black Chromes (#'d to the year, and very popular) vs. Heritage Blacks (#'d /50, widely ignored).

1991 we had 10 sets. Topps releases almost that in a month now.
Bowman
Donruss
Fleer
Fleer Ultra
Leaf
Score
Studio
Topps
Stadium Club
Upper Deck

More nostalgia for people who wanted an Elite, but could never pull one, or afford it then. That $100 for 91 Elite Rickey is going to have more emotional attachment than yet another /100 from one of....are we at 100 different annual Topps sets yet?

There also doesn't seem to be much creativity for "inserts" in today's releases. A ton of parallels, subset parallels, and different colors of very bland basic "insert" sets.

Really boring.

Visit the 90's insert thread and see what things were like 30 years ago. Some really cool stuff. 90's Basketball insert sets were especially wild.

There's an exception for White Sox Griffey autos only.

Don't care what anyone says, I love this card. 2001 was a big year for me in collecting and this card screams 2001.

So as I learn I have to ask have we gone away from insert sets
And moved more into paralell sets ?

No doubt a lot more sets
Do you think that “waters down” or dilutes the market ?

They’re still separate things with separate collector groups.

In general, if some tells me they have a base set of 2023 Topps, my yawn would be heard around the block. But a complete #/2023 gold set? That’s pretty boss. A #/72 black complete set? Whoa…
