Default OK…. What Type of Refractor is This?

I’ve never seen this type of serial numbering where only the serial number but it is missing “of” and “289”

Is this a fake? A replacement? I’ve asked several people about this and even had to back out of a trade due to this.

Any info is appreciated.

It's a gold refractor, but missing the "of 289" stamp.

Is this a legit copy? Pack pulled, replacement, backdoored?

99% sure it’s not pack pulled.

Only reason I’m not 100% is because I think these backdoored copies usually have either no serial or just the of 289 portion. I’ve still never heard of any pack pulled examples having only partial serial.

99.5% not pack pulled

As a kid, I opened a lot of this, I pulled the Jordan Embossed Die-Cut Gold. Sold it like a chump.

Same.

I even opened a few more recently, though pre-covid. Hit jack $hit. They were $150 a piece at the time. One of my favorite products ever.

There were a ton of these on eBay, even the Topps eBay account was selling these (I think it was "TheToppsArchive"... here's an auction from someone who had dozen of the uncut sheets for sale:

Some sheets were sold full, some were cut in strips like above, some were individual cards, etc... but all kinds of these in all forms (i.e. Atomic Refractors that weren't Atomic) were sold for years for $5-$10 a card as a novelty for collectors! I have a bunch and love them as such - funny to see people paying thousands for some, because, they're like, rare? Lots of fake serial numbers applied to some of these just like the PMG's and other sets... buyer beware!

Right, but I think most know this. What OP is showing an example of is the specific serial number stamp rather than the “of 289” stamp.

While I agree it’s probably still just backdoored, I’ve never noticed serials like the Rice.

LOL. Thanks for taking notice.

Also , thank you everyone who posted. It’s a good thing I did not pay much for it.

I alluded to what this most likely is... We have seen everything from no serial numbers to missing the 289 to complete serial numbers with the wrong font... etc... It's impossible to know for sure, but I'd assume this card is either real and the serial was not applied when printing, or more likely, was one of these blanks and someone was experimenting on the font to perfect their fakes! Either way, it's a cheap, cool PC card!

I just assumed you were strictly referring to the “of 289” partial stamps going by the listing pics.

I still always shy away just because they weren’t in packs.
