Debuting this week at SDCC.
Anyone seen word of a wider release?

It says "Debut" so hopefully that means there will be a wider distro for these at some point.

Very interesting that this is a full set and not a limited promotional set like recent Upper Deck Marvel SDCC exclusives.

The side of the box says "Look For Prototype, Clear Cut, And Glow In The Dark Parallel Cards!"

Wonder if this also means we will start seeing Marvel Funkos on Upper Deck’s Collect Forever website? They have released 2 basketball Funkos a year apart but so far no Marvel ones.

Unrelated but UD does have one of its SDCC exclusive card sets this year: World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King.

https://sdccblog.com/2023/07/upper-d...usives-debuts/

So this Funko set is an entirely separate UD product debuting at SDCC.

Looks like it’s going to be priced at $189.99 a box? Ouch. I guess there are no affordable sets to buy now.

”Each box will also come with an Exclusive Marvel Funko Pop! Promo Card. The Promo Card is an Exclusive Holographic Card and numbered to 1000.

So a limited release unless they offer a separate variation without the holo at a later date.

EDIT: ”Packs can include 1 of 1 original art sketches and every box of 24 packs includes a redemption pack that allows access to an exclusive Marvel Pop figure only available through the card packs!

I always love the wording. A pack "that allows access" means it's probably not a free redemption--they're gonna charge even more than the already high price of the box.

I'm so glad I never got into Funko stuff. I know there are still completionists out there who are probably loving this product!

Holy hell, $189.99? UD needs a dose of reality. Inflated prices do not create valuable cards.

no worries....whatever (if any) is left over they will throw on epack and raise the price even more and it will still sell out there

So my apologies, can someone explain e-pack to me? From what I gathered you open the cards digitally and then they are shipped to you? Or am I way off base in my understanding.

Yes you open them digitally. Some cards would be digital only (normally base). And they would reside in your epack account. You can trade these to other members, or sometimes you can collect multiples of them and combine them to upgrade to a physical card.

Some cards would also be physical. These would also reside in your epack account, and can be traded, and combined etc... These can also be shipped to you for a cost, or transferred to COMC where they can be listed and sold, or listed on ebay. All for a fee of course.

Looking at checklist I think I’m not going to go out of the way for the SDCC box but might pick up a retail blaster or 2 and then maybe a few boxes on ePack.

I ASSume the sketches will all be chibi-looking Funko figure sketches. But having Funko artists on sketch list is kind of neat.

You have to win an online lottery to even be allowed to purchase these. I didn't win. But if they have any left in the allotment each day they'll take walk-ups. I'm a stupid stupid man so I'm gonna try to snag me a box today when I'm done checking out some panels.

$190 a box sounds insane.

I get that SDCC is an "event" and exclusive products like these are popular but it always seems like a slap in the face to collectors that they're only available at SDCC and hard to get even if you're at SDCC.

At least this particular product is going to have widespread availability on e-Pack later.

The trend now in trading cards seems to be to price everything higher upfront so the card makers cash in on some of the $ that previously was going to box flippers in secondary market. If boxes were routinely going for 2x or 3x in secondary market soon after the release, Upper Deck and Topps/Fanatics weren’t cashing in on that spike.

So now it’s like they are trying to squeeze a bit more cash out of customers upfront which might end up pricing some collectors out of the market entirely. Or just cause customers to change their buying habits… e.g. wait for the COMC race to the bottom to buy singles you want rather than break product at increased prices.

boxes seem to be selling in the $330-350 range (with the promo card) and $300-330 or so (without) for now....will see if that holds up, or even goes higher.

Looks like SDCC boxes will experience a better return than Funko stock.

In other news, I actually did browse the Funko site for SDCC exclusives and ended up picking up this Bizarro… so they at least got $15 out of me today.

How can that sustain? With long odds at actual hits (not parallels), what are people chasing for that price?
