Only had HOF coaches his whole career. Don Shula who was on the down swing to becoming most wins ever. Jimmy Johnson who was given the greatest RB ever not named Jim Brown on a platter.
Only had 2 other HOF players, Dwight Stephenson who retired 4 years into his career and Jason Taylor who's resume didnt really start until Marino was gone. Some would argue Richmond Webb and Zach Thomas would already be in the hall if it wasn't for Marino. Ended his career with second most wins in NFL history, just never at the last game of the season. Over glorified stat padder? Or just a victim to the Fins total inability to find and keep talent?

Underrated.
Got to the Super Bowl with this supporting cast:

I'm not even sure where people 'rate' him. I always saw him as very good. A lot of these current QB's are going to be the 'Marino's' of their generation. Stats for days, but only a few will get the distinction of holding that Lombardi. With one-and-done playoffs, you need luck just as much as talent to make it that far, let alone win it all. It was a far different game back then, too.

People who feel Marino is overrated probably didn't see him play and likely haven't celebrated their 30th birthday yet. His gameplay was revolutionary for his era. He's anything but overrated.

He was the best at his position for several years. Not quite at the level of......say.....Everett or Bledsoe......but decent enough.

But yes, considering that nobody puts him in the GOAT category, I can't say he's overrated. I'll put him over guys like Young, Aikman, etc, who has amazing teams around them.

I don't think he was overrated in Ace Ventura. Properly rated. He was so annoying to try and intercept in Tecmo Super Bowl. 81 speed rocket arm plus accuracy. Bubby Brister, John Elway, and BJ Tolliver WISH they could be him.

Every modern QB is overrated.
Arena football should not be rated. |

I have always thought Marino was underrated. The fact that he didn't win a Super Bowl leads people to believe he wasn't as good as he really was.
Plus the young'uns don't appreciate how extraordinary his stats were for the time. 5,000 passing yards isn't that big a deal these days but when Marino did it in 1984, not only was he the first, but he would be the only one to do it for 24 years. |

he threw for a ton of yards. completion percentage was lower than some of the elite QBs of the time, interception rate was higher. Through the 80s there's an alarming amount of 20 interception seasons. Then came inconsistency and injuries. He threw it. A lot. but that's only a small part of the story. I like efficiency, I like less turnovers. Yards are cool, but yards don't = wins. I don't think it's necessarily his fault - his defenses weren't great, often, and he never had an amazing running back. but his body of work has ups and downs. If you told me tomorrow I could have prime Marino as my franchise QB, I'd take him, but top 5 is for the very, very elite.
