Default Where are we at on eBay returns?

If I bought a card from a seller on eBay who offers 30 day returns, am I in the wrong for wanting to return it 3 weeks after purchase just because I don't want it anymore?

I understand this use to be an immediate "add to blocklist", and as a seller I'd be pissed. But eBay has adapted their policies to combat this and if you're still offering 30-day returns is that not on the seller at this point?

This is hypothetical. Just curious if our mood has changed on this.

Yes you are in the wrong. Sports cards are not clothes.

Pretty much answered your own question there, didn't you? Not sure why that wasn't the end of the "analysis" for you.

I was referring to back in the day. I hated when people did this, but there was nothing I could do to stop it. Now there is.

Way to long...to much can happen in the card world in 30 days.

At this point I don't feel bad for many of the sellers on eBay. I probably still have some crap on there, but I will be using it to sell up to $599 worth of used electronics each year and stay below the stupid $600 threshold. Yes I pay taxes on net proceeds, but I am not dealing with 1099K forms and starting a business or treating cards as stocks on a schedule D. I guess their $20 "tracking" PWE service is ok, but this new authentication process is insane. I even stopped using eBay for the majority of my purchases. I strictly B/T on forums and use COMC these days.

When the authentication goes down to $250, I will no longer use them at all except for the occasional vintage raw purchase. I don't care what happens on that platform anymore and won't feel bad for the buyers/sellers there that sell cards over $250.

Actually, you're a good person to ask since I just looked on your eBay and saw you still offer 14-day returns. Are you okay with a customer returning something within that 14-day period? Why not change it to "no returns accepted"?

Ah. I see. Makes sense.

Well, as a very-occasional seller and more-frequent buyer, I can say 100% that I would be pissed now and would expect a seller to be pissed now. I'd assume that someone leaving returns turned on was a mistake - or, at the most, that they wanted to leave a possibility for returning the card if there was a legitimate issue with it without having to go through a forced-refund Ebay case (what a pain).

Changed your mind about wanting the card (/wanting it at the price you paid)? Good luck re-selling it yourself, best wishes, not my issue.

Yea I think 2 weeks is more than enough time to file a return. Even if you "do not except returns" a buyer can still return a card if they claim its been damaged or doesn't match the description per Ebays Money Back Gaurantee.

Yeah, that's a hell naw from me dawg. The eBay return policy is for clothes and other knick knacks. Not sports cards.

Buyers can also go through PayPal if paid that way. If they buy with a credit card on PayPal, they have a third option for getting there money back. It doesn't matter if you put no returns, the buyer has many layers of protection to get their money back or force a return.

I don't know how people deal with selling ultra-modern cards on eBay. Seems like a huge headache! The majority of people I dealt with as a buyer/seller from the junk wax to vintage eras has been great! I guess when you are mainly dealing with people over 30 and not 19 year old Gary V flippers it is a completely different experience on eBay.

I've sold more than 600 items in the past 6-months and have not had a single return. I think people are a little too harsh on eBay sometimes. It's really not that bad.

The type of cards you sell is the reason. I had absolutely no issues with selling ultra-modern numbered cards. The vast majority of cards you sell are going to collectors who are looking for these cards for rainbows and PC's. The numbered ultra-modern cards I sold have all been great sales. They are usually super excited to get the card because they have been looking all over for it.

People offer 30 day returns not because they enjoy getting things returned, but because eBay incenitivizes it. I've been selling on eBay for over 20 years and I've learned if a buyer wants to return something, they're going to find a way to do it. It's easier to be cordial and go with it vs trying to fight it and getting a neg. That doesn't mean I'm happy about it, it doesn't mean I never block people, but trying to stop it is a losing battle in my experience.

I don't sell cards at all anymore. I said B/T, not B/S/T. I either buy cards or trade cards.

It also isn't $600 earned online. Do you think eBay is in contact with PayPal combining sales to send you a 1099-K form? If you sell $500 on eBay managed payments and $500 on PayPal, you won't receive a 1099-K form.

yes, you are in the wrong. buyer's remorse isn't a valid reason for return no matter the return window.

Whats your rationale with stopping at 600 over a tax form? Its a poverty mindset, and I dont mean that in a 'you are poor' kinda way.

Sell as much as you want, hire a solid accountant (I have an awesome one for $1200 a year) and I hand them a bunch of receipts and paperwork every quarter, and I come out of tax season relatively clean. There is so much stuff you can write off that you wouldnt even think about, that is 100% legal, and 100% counts against your profits. I'm not educated in that field enough to do it myself....but I can promise every penny I give my accountant is worth it an I dont have to stress numbers like $600 or $20,000. No ceiling which allowed me to grow my online business about 700% in the past 5 years. (a hot card market inflates that number a little....but still)

Back to the point.....not a good idea, and a lot of bad karma even if there is a 30 policy.

I was having trouble finding this language. Can you post a link here?

You're either trying to perform a very bad troll job or you're not very bright. You've been on these boards long enough to know the answers you would get. But you already knew that...maybe!

This is completely a hobby for me and the last few years I kept a spreadsheet of net proceeds of cards. Even that was a pain. Filing a schedule C or D just isn't for me and I do my own taxes. Selling a few garage sale items on eBay for $500 is fine for me and those items are at a net lost, so no issues with taxes.

It probably isn't the new tax law because I am stopping eBay sales. Trading allows me to get cards I want without selling for a 20% fee and then paying 8% in taxes if I buy on eBay. Plus I hate spreadsheets! I am sure if I was 21 years old and this could lead to supplemental income, I would probably sell more.

I probably should have done a poll. I was more just curious if the attitude towards returns has changed at all since eBay changed their policy. Seems like most still find it unacceptable to return sports cards, but acceptable to return items such as clothes. One day I think they will both be acceptable. Apparently we aren't there yet.

If the seller offers it, might as well take advantage of it just like you would any other seller that offered it, like Best Buy assuming Best Buy has such a policy.

Sellers here appear to want to be big time but should stand behind their merchandise just like the big boys.

Plenty of sellers not desperate to make a buck wouldn’t care if you wanted to make a return…these are always the best sellers. You know, like Best Buy, and collectors who don’t need money from their hobby.

This is eBay and unless you are selling new items and a legitimate business, I don't think returns should be accepted unless the seller made false claims or misrepresented their item. If I buy a pair of used shoes for my daughter on eBay, which I wouldn't do, and they didn't fit because I didn't know her proper size, I am not returning them and costing the seller of a used item return shipping. If this was Target and the new shoes didn't fit and I made the mistake, sure I would use their online return policy.

This is the problem with eBay. A lot of people now probably think they are buying from eBay and not an individual. Every year eBay and Amazon are becoming more similar. eBay is less of an auction house on online garage sale company these days. It is becoming an online store with new products from large sellers.
