Default ***Official 2021 New England Patriots Thread***

Just re-signed Cam, so figured it was as good a time as any to start up a thread.

Hard to believe they're paying $14 million for him...Has to be in incentives to do with passing touchdowns and yardage and maybe playoffs/pro bowl? No way they're just paying him even half that in base salary.

So it isn't Jarrett Stidham SZN?

Does Cam have blackmail on Belichick or something? I can see no other explanation for why they would pay him fourteen million dollars

Good god... what is Belichick's obsession with Cam. He can't throw the ball.

Maybe Belichick is (as always) one step ahead of football trends and is going full 1950's run offense when all the defenses are built to stop the pass.

Cam is a great guy, but a terrible QB.

Ridiculous start to the offseason. Starting to wonder if Bill is losing it after some of his decisions the past 5 years.

I don't understand it at all. Very frustrating.

He got the Rona and maybe a full season, he has a bounce back year.

One more season doesn’t make or break anything especially when shooting for a young QB somewhere.

Which is more likely, first round QB or first round WR?

Curious. For all the Jimmy G. going back to the Pats talk and all that... I don't think Wilson or Watson get moved, I think SF stays with Jimmy. Next year will be the real QB carousel.

Is the Cam deal fully guaranteed? Maybe Bill sees 2022 as the comeback year?

Belichick & Co. making moves. Most I think I've ever seen from them on opening day of FA

Jonnu Smith 4/$50 mil
Davon Godchaux 2/$16 mil
Matt Judon 4/$56 mil
Jalen Mills 4/$24 mil

I'm a fan of the first three, will have to look into Mills.

Late reply, but the Cam deal is mostly incentives.

https://www.espn.com/blog/new-englan...m-starting-job

"Newton will earn $5.1 million if he's healthy and on the roster as a backup, with upside to $6.6 million if he starts all season and $8.6 million if he starts and the team makes the playoffs. The rest of the money he can earn, up to a total of $13.6 million, is based on honors and how far New England might advance in the playoffs."

@jeffphowe
The Patriots aren't done.

I'd expect a wide receiver by the end of the day, too.

Dang, the vet market isn't all that intriguing honestly. I'd look to the draft even if they sign one.

I would actually do the exact opposite. BB’s record of drafting WR’s has been abysmal. I would much rather them spend on a Samuel, Golladay type of WR then draft someone in the first two rounds.

Cam coming back was no big surprise to me. Considering what's available in the field, I think this is probably the best option by default. He will continue to be a stop gap solution until the team can rebuild, which may take another year or two.

Agree, any of Fuller, Golladay, Samuel, Jones, or Davis I'd be happy with.

They can still draft one+, they need them, but definitely think they should sign at least one quality WR.

Reunion of Cam / Samuel would be amazing given the lack of receiving talent / flexibility

@jeffphowe
Nate Solder, Trent Brown and now Joe Thuney have left the Patriots to sign record-setting offensive line contracts since 2018. That's an incredible run.

I don't understand why he hasn't been able to get this right in 20 years. Here's a complete list of every WR he's picked in the first four rounds.

2002: Deion Branch (2-65)
2003: Bethel Johnson (2-45)
2006: Chad Jackson (2-36)
2009: Brandon Tate (3-83)
2010: Taylor Price (3-90)
2013: Aaron Dobson (2-59), Josh Boyce (4-102)
2016: Malcolm Mitchell (4-112)
2019: N'Keal Harry (1-32)

After Deion Branch, it's been two decades of garbage. (Malcolm Mitchell was good for the one year before his knee gave out and he retired.)

Matt Judon is overrated.

I’m actually shocked Beli gave him that much

I'm not saying, "don't sign a vet WR, only draft one." I'm saying I don't have confidence in the FA market on WR.
-Samuel's best stat line (over different seasons) was 77/851/6
-Golladay was a Pro Bowler at least, couple 1,000 yard seasons, but only played 5 games a year ago and only has one full season under his belt. Would be the one signee I'd be happy to get.
-Fuller hasn't started more than 11 games in the past 4 years. 2020 was his best at 53/879/8.
-Davis also only has one fully healthy season. 11 TDs in four seasons. Meh.
-Jones is the wrong side of 30. Maybe a good WR2-3 and a mentor for the young guys.

All of them would step in and be WR1 in New England, but probably WR2 at best anywhere with a respectable corps.

Belichick is better at trading for his vet receivers. Moss, Welker, Cooks.

And Kendrick Bourne. Warm body I guess. Must really like him at 3/$22.5 mil. Sheesh.
